Insights into Employee Relations for Striking an Effective Balance in an Organization
SCB – Siam Commercial Bank
As Thailand’s first bank, Siam Commercial Bank firmly grows and want to be The Most Admired Bank in Thai people’s heart.
Many people may view acting as a "middleman" between two disputing parties as a thankless task. Each side will be unhappy to see their interests compromised if you take a side or negotiate in favor of only one of them. Keeping the balance between employers and employees and bringing the most happiness to both sides is a constant struggle for any intermediary whose role revolves around employee relations.
Career SCB is pleased to introduce Kamlai Jindapon, who is in charge of employee relations, and who will share some insights into her work that affects the lives of many people, and the importance of her role in the company.
The beginning of a career path marked by strong determination
Kamlai revealed that she received her undergraduate degree from the Faculty of Law and pursued a master's degree in the social sciences due to her passion for research. After finishing her degree, she entered the legal area and was given a position dealing with labor relations.

She first got into this profession because she was interested in the law, but as time went on, she realized that she really loved helping people, and that's what made her stay in it. Kamlai must sometimes act as an intermediary in mediating disputes between employers and employees when the two parties are unable to come to an agreement on their own.?This is because the key to labor relations is establishing a good relationship between employers and employees, to prevent employers from taking advantage of employees and not allowing employees to demand unreasonable privileges.
The difficulty of playing "middleman" between two parties who refuse to take a stance
Despite sitting on the same side of the desk with her boss, Kamlai is still an employee at heart.?Having this trait benefits her in seeing things from both parties' perspectives and meeting their needs. When the Bank institutes a new policy, for instance, she can better explain it to staff because she can relate to their situation. Moreover, she will do her best to protect each party's rights and minimize the harm caused by any conflict.
Kamlai explained, "My role here requires me to address endless requirements. To maximize profits is a goal shared by business owners. Therefore, the difficulty lies in finding a middle ground and meeting employees' requirements or requests within the limit whereby the employer can afford to accommodate those demands. Finding a happy medium between company aims and employee requirements is difficult because these two sets of people rarely align.
Responsibilities that must be fulfilled with a firm stance
Another challenge of working in this position is that Kamlai must listen to employees’ demands, regardless of whether or not she agrees with them. For instance, she is expected to listen to requests, make an effort to comprehend them, and then bring them up to management, even if they run against the organization's interests or regulations. If Kamlai thinks a demand is too great or she anticipates an unfavorable outcome, she will be prepared with knowledge so that she can communicate any reasoning before the situation gets out of hand.

Being firm in one's beliefs and standing firm on one's values are both crucial to success in this position. If you have a habit of giving in to every request, you may have to do so repeatedly. You can't make a decision about anything if you lack a guiding principle or stance.
Pay attention to preserving ethical standards in the workplace.
Kamlai noted that she must follow the labor law that is applicable to all employers in order to safeguard her employees when discussing the standards and norms for considering various demands. There are also industry norms and incentives that some companies give their own staff as added perks. Most employers will go above what the law requires to attract and retain talented workers. Therefore, these two things are mostly responsible for determining the criteria for examining diverse needs.
Even if the Bank's offerings are primarily based on official laws, they may have their own special restrictions that differ from government regulations. Before any avoidable problems arise between the employer and the employees, it is Kamlai's responsibility to ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding the rules and the repercussions for breaking them.
Fair judgments with transparent processes
Since large companies have many workers, it is essential that they establish codes of conduct. According to Kamlai, when a firm establishes restrictions and agreements, all employees will be expected to be aware of them. Those who violate these regulations shall be punished as prescribed.?For disciplinary actions against employees, the Bank relies on a committee it has constituted to conduct an investigation and render a verdict. Unless the company is unable to reach a worker, no disciplinary action will be taken without first conducting an investigation.
Kamlai thinks that all workers are aware of the consequences for misconduct, yet they occasionally act irresponsibly because they fail to fully grasp the gravity of the situation. Knowledge and information on these topics must be thoroughly shared.
Inspiration for work that seeks to eliminate ignorance of the law
Kamlai is compassionate and doesn't like to be a part of anyone's judging process, despite the fact that her job involves laws, rules, and regulations addressing punishments and infractions. And yet, she despises the thought of somebody she cares about making a bad decision. For this reason, Kamlai is eager to keep working here. She's there to guide workers toward making good decisions. "I keep telling myself, it would be amazing if I could help someone become a better person." As a result, she is committed to educating workers on the applicable rules so that they might make fewer mistakes in their work.
According to Kamlai, concern for the well-being of employees is the purpose of this role.?She hopes that people will come to terms with this fact and be afraid to act dishonestly. She's committed to spending the time necessary to listen to one another and brainstorm possible solutions. She makes it a point to share her legal expertise whenever possible so that she can alert workers to the consequences of misconduct before it's too late and they lose their jobs or their futures. For Kamlai, you can't cite "ignorance of the law" as an alibi for wrongdoing.
