Insights #014: Artists, Build A Support Network

Being an artist can be rewarding, but oftentimes it is a challenging journey. Without the help of others, most artists are sure to fail, and building a collaborative community is the best way an artist can grow and succeed within the music industry. At its core are dedicated team members—managers, agents, and publicists—who provide guidance. Fans offer unwavering support, cultivated through genuine connections and engagement, and partnerships and collaborations with brands, musicians, and influencers expand an artist's reach and creativity. Building a support network early on in one's career is crucial to achieving any goals they may have. The #014 edition will offer different tips and ideas artists can use to further expand their musical endeavors.

Network and Have a Manager

Networking with others will prove to be beneficial in the long run, and not only will it help you branch out and meet other artists, but it will also help you find a manager. Music is everywhere, and a simple search will show musician networking opportunities in your city that will connect you with others. The music industry is a business, and not having someone who can effectively communicate with others will ultimately leave you behind. Managers tackle most of the behind-the-scenes work like relationship communication, financials, securing signings and placements, etc. Going to networking events may help artists connect with others who can give advice about the industry and help them navigate the music business.

Seek Mentorship

Identify experienced artists or industry professionals who can serve as mentors and provide guidance on navigating the industry. One of the most notable artist/mentor relationships was between Eminem and Dr. Dre; through his time as Eminem’s mentor, Dr. Dre helped guide him through fame, controversy, and even addiction, which helped give fans one of the greatest lyrical minds in rap. Without a mentor, artists can expect to fall victim to misleading record deals and have slower skill development since they won’t be given constructive feedback and tips for improvement. An artist's best chance of having a mentor is by reaching out to them respectfully, expressing admiration for their work, and showing an interest in learning from their experiences.?

Utilize online platforms.

In this day and age, artists must use social media as a way to showcase work, stay connected with fans, and collaborate with other artists. Using online platforms like Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc. will help aspiring artists connect with others and advertise their IP, and an artist who successfully did this was Justin Bieber. He first gained attention on YouTube, where videos of him singing were posted, and because of this, he gained the attention of manager Scooter Braun and artist Usher. Shortly after, he branched out and got his music into films, one of which was The Karate Kid (2010). His song “Never Say Never," featuring Jaden Smith, was used as the theme song for this film. Since then, Bieber has been a global icon, which may have never happened if he hadn't utilized an online platform. A more recent example is Taylor Swift, who used TikTok to connect with her fans uniquely. Despite facing restrictions, Swift was allowed by Universal to utilize the platform to its fullest extent, showcasing her powerful fanbase and the strategic use of IP. This move underscores the importance of strong fan engagement and the leverage that comes with it. Always create meaningful and high-quality content to give yourself the best chance of attracting investors looking to provide capital for your success.?

Embarking on a journey in the music industry is undoubtedly challenging, but with the right strategies and support systems, artists can navigate these difficulties and achieve their goals. Building a strong, collaborative community through networking events and seeking mentorship provides invaluable guidance and opportunities. Leveraging online platforms enables artists to showcase their work, connect with fans, and collaborate with peers. By integrating these approaches, artists can foster their growth, enhance their visibility, and ultimately succeed in the competitive world of music.
