Welcome and overview of the Insight Day

Merkle welcomed nineteen trainees, who are the participants of the ‘Creativity Works’ programme with Media Trust, to join us for a day of discovery into the world of digital marketing, providing them with enough knowledge to complete a group presentation later in the day. Split into groups of four, everyone spent time collaborating on a campaign from a set Brief and individually presented their proposals!

The event host – Ryan Skeet, Paid Search specialist

With seven years’ experience in Paid Search, Ryan was perfectly placed to start the day, providing an introduction on Merkle and covering the main business areas of digital marketing: Paid Search, Programmatic Display and Paid Social.

Discussions were held on the following topics:

  • How advertising works online.
  • How Google (and other search engines)’s algorithms tailor to your interest and affect the cost of advertising.
  • Examples of the stipulation’s clients request for campaigns worked on such as costs and revenue goals.
  • How Brands who are making an investment for their campaign need to understand the outcomes of their campaigns e.g. importance of measurement.
  • How purchase decisions are measured through engagement and conversions.
  • Understanding negative keywords, with a great example - you would not want to see an advert encouraging you to book a flight alongside an article with details of a plane crash.
  • How machines cannot understand human emotions and that many decisions still need to come from humans.
  • How software cannot think creatively, and why humans are needed to interact in real time and have personal connections.
  • How AI is not able to yet spontaneously create new ideas.

The group activity

The trainees were next set a Brief which allowed them to utilise the learnings from Ryan, working in groups before then presenting back their campaigns to everyone.

The Brief

  • Tommy Hilfiger have asked us to help them launch a new fragrance which is a unisex scent and aimed at those aged 20-40.
  • They want to ensure we’re raising awareness of this exciting new product, whilst also building sales, and have a total budget for this campaign of £500,000.

The Task

  • In your groups, review what you’ve learned and put together your proposal for a campaign.
  • You should use a combination of Paid Search, Programmatic Display and Paid Social and be read to present back to everyone.

The Presentations

All the Groups presented their recommendations for their group campaigns – a summary of suggestions and ideas put forward are summarised:

  • Splitting costs between all three marketing channels with each group confirming their individual reasons for their percentage breakdowns.
  • Advertising space targeting people who are single on the dating app Tinder.
  • Advertising through Ticketmaster, Eventbrite, airlines and duty free where you would receive an actual ticket to place advertising on.
  • Specific home and lifestyle magazines and social media apps for TikTok, YouTube and Facebook due to the demographics of the age group specified.
  • Targeting customer types and breaking this down to measure the success of the campaign.
  • Ad extensions and location extensions for those wanting to test the fragrance.
  • Looking at external advertising spaces such as department stores, billboards, sports events.
  • Realising perfume needs a visual so Instagram and TikTok were identified as the social media platforms best suited, and they also provided fast results.
