Insider’s glimpse into the logistics of agriculture in India

Hello everyone,

We’re back with the 12th edition of Logistics Lens, the Blowhorn weekly newsletter on logistics and fulfillment.

Every week, we delve into insights from the industry, share inspiring success stories, and offer expert tips and suggestions on how to leverage the power of logistics to grow your business. This week we are discussing the different facets of logistics involved in agriculture — the backbone of our country’s economy.?

The agricultural sector of India employs over 151 million people, nearly 60% of the national population. Logistics plays a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of Indian agriculture, serving as the vital link between farmers and consumers.?

With the vast expanse and diversity of our agricultural sector, efficient logistics is needed to ensure that agricultural produce reaches markets in a timely and cost-effective manner, minimizing post-harvest losses and ensuring food security.?

India's agricultural success hinges on factors such as proper storage, transportation, and distribution of crops. Well-established logistics networks facilitate the movement of perishable goods, such as fruits and vegetables, from rural areas to urban centers, thereby reducing wastage and enhancing the income of farmers. Moreover, effective logistics also enable the adoption of modern farming practices by ensuring the availability of inputs like seeds, fertilizers, and machinery. By fostering seamless connectivity between various nodes of the agricultural supply chain, logistics not only boosts productivity and profitability for farmers but also contributes significantly to overall economic growth and rural development.

Read this blog to understand why logistics is important for the economic growth of Indian farmers:

By 2030, the agricultural logistics market of India is expected to grow at an annual rate of 5%. While it does seem promising after the severe impact of farming during the pandemic, there are still multiple factors to consider.?Latest estimates show that grain logistics in India contribute to 55% of total freight movement in India.

Surprisingly, 90% of grain logistics is still dependent on an “on-spot” system, where trucks are rented/booked on the spot. And hence, the availability of trucks for rent at all times becomes extremely crucial, irrespective of the season, terrain or time of the day.

At Blowhorn, we adhere to a 24X7 availability policy when it comes to truck rentals — be it for agricultural freight or anything else. Blowhorn trucks of all sizes and capacities are available at your service anytime you need. As a matter of fact, our trucks are used by multiple farm-to-table companies, who use the vehicles to deliver fresh farm harvest straight from the fields to the customer's doorstep.

Agricultural logistics significantly contributes to India's logistics growth by facilitating efficient movement of crops, reducing post-harvest losses, improving rural connectivity, enabling modern farming practices, and fostering economic development in both agricultural and logistical sectors.

In 2022, the Indian logistics market was around $274 billion and it is estimated to reach a whopping $563 billion by 2030.?
