Here’s what to know today:

Markets:

Before the opening bell: US stock futures fall?early Wednesday?after Alphabet and Microsoft reported earnings.

  • So today I’m gonna invest like it’s 1999. The booming stock market is looking awfully similar to the one that preceded the dot-com crash of the early 2000s, according to JPMorgan. From market composition to valuations, here are all the ways the two eras are eerily alike.

Tech:

  • A judge struck down Elon Musk's $55 billion Tesla pay package. The judge sided with a shareholder who argued in a lawsuit that the Tesla CEO’s massive pay plan was "beyond the bounds of reasonable judgment."?

Business:

  • The economy is roaring. So why do we keep hearing about layoffs? January marked a month of layoffs for employees at companies like The Los Angeles Times, UPS, and Microsoft, to name a few. But data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that the nation's layoffs and discharges rate has been steadily low, hovering at about 1%.

I understand why some people might be disappointed by the judge's ruling, but I believe it was the right decision. While Elon Musk is an extraordinary individual, his pay package was simply too big. It was 250 times larger than the average bonus for a CEO of a large company. Musk's pay package was based on achieving certain goals, but those goals were vague and difficult to achieve. This meant that Musk was essentially guaranteed a significant payout, regardless of how he ran the company. I believe it is important for CEOs to be fairly compensated for their work, but that compensation should be based on real achievements. Musk's pay package did not meet that requirement. I hope this ruling will be a starting point for more reasonable regulation of CEO compensation packages. This would help to create a more just and efficient economy.
