Semiotics: How to unlock creativity with semiotics

Wanting to understand how in-house creative teams can harness the power of semiotics, we invited expert semiotician Cato Hunt to share her insights on how in-house creative leaders can use semiotics to unlock creativity.?

Cato leads Creative Strategy, at a global cultural and creative consultancy that helps organisations become more impactful, meaningful, and relevant by connecting them more deeply with culture.

Our session take-outs:

  • Semiotics is the way of understanding sign systems in culture and the way in which meaning is communicated. Everything communicates; therefore, every decision about your brand matters.

  • To be meaningful and relevant, you need your brand to have a purpose. To create positive change, you need to collectively understand the brand's meaning.

  • Meaning is changing so we need to anticipate and think ahead about the sorts of ideas emerging within your sector or category.

  • Cultural insights should be at the top of the agenda. The importance of understanding culture is to understand your brand and your brand's place in culture.

  • Brands are swimming in a much wider context, so it’s important to understand the bigger ideas we are trying to connect. Take ourselves outside every day and seek inspiration.

The Inside Out? Awards have always encouraged and attracted a high number of entries from Charities. This year was no exception, demonstrating creative excellence, collaboration, and business impact.

The 2023 Inside Out? Awards revealed the exceptional creative work and storytelling being told from across the in-house creative community. Work that is original, creatively brave, and distinctive. Work that has been created collaboratively with precision and purpose.

This virtual event will shine a light on three distinct campaigns showcasing the stories told and projects delivered by some of the very best in-house creative teams from Waitrose and Partners, Severn Trent Water and Gousto.
