Inside Vantage Point Consulting: Employee Spotlight

This week’s employee spotlight shines on Senior Software Engineer Alex Devillier.

What inspired you to join the team here at Vantage Point Consulting?

I remember working with Vantage Point Consulting on a previous project and thinking, “That’s where I should be working!” The small company charisma combined with large company intelligence appealed to me.

?

What do you do at Vantage Point, and how does your role impact others?

As a Senior Software Engineer, I mainly create custom web applications, including frontends, backends, databases, infrastructure architecture, CI/CD, and security concerns. My work directly contributes to the functionality and security of the applications our clients rely on.

Which project has been your favorite to work on?

That’s like asking, “What child is your favorite?”

?

Can you share a recent project you worked on and what made it successful?

One of the more recent projects I've been working on is the DODMOU website. It's been a unique challenge as most of my work has focused on updating security concerns, which is largely invisible to site users but crucial for protecting their data.

?

What’s the most rewarding aspect of your job?

There's a lot to love about engineering, especially when you have problems worth solving. Tackling complex challenges and learning something new daily keeps the work engaging and fulfilling.

?

How have you grown professionally?

Gradually, daily. The web moves too fast not to be always learning something.

?

What’s a common challenge our clients face, and how do you help solve it?

It's the same thing that plagues us all: bad communication. I put my efforts into patience, endurance, and understanding so that a complex idea can be understood through many smaller, simpler ideas. Clear communication is key to successful project outcomes.

?

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about Vantage Point?

It’s that trope of a small company charisma with large company intelligence.

?

What are your passions or hobbies outside of work, and have they influenced your career?

My longest and largest hobbies include making music and playing video games. While they may seem unrelated to software engineering, the creativity, and problem-solving skills I've developed through these pursuits have definitely influenced my approach to my work.

Advice for those aspiring to grow in your field

Don't give in to imposter syndrome; take breaks; find something interesting and learn every day.
