Musk’s vision for Tesla extends beyond just making cars. He wants Tesla to be recognized as an AI company that has perfected the art of autonomous driving by mimicking human perception. This goal has driven the development of Dojo, which Musk began teasing as early as 2019 and officially announced during Tesla’s AI Day in 2021.
The Supercomputer Explained
A supercomputer like Dojo consists of thousands of smaller computers, known as nodes, each with its own CPU (central processing unit) and GPU (graphics processing unit). The GPUs handle complex tasks such as splitting data into manageable parts and processing them simultaneously, which is essential for machine learning operations.
Tesla currently relies heavily on Nvidia GPUs to power its AI training but aims to reduce dependence on third-party hardware by developing its own D1 chips. These chips are specifically optimized for AI workloads, promising increased efficiency and performance.
The Need for Dojo
Tesla’s unique vision-only approach to autonomous driving necessitates an immense amount of compute power to process the visual data collected from millions of miles of driving. This data is used to train neural networks to recognize and classify objects, make driving decisions, and continuously improve through simulations.

Inside the D1 Chip

To achieve even higher performance, Tesla’s AI team has combined 25 D1 chips into a single tile, creating a unified computer system with immense compute power and bandwidth. These tiles are then assembled into racks and cabinets, forming the ExaPODs that make up the Dojo supercomputer.

What Dojo Means for Tesla
By developing its own chips and supercomputer infrastructure, Tesla aims to significantly reduce costs and increase its control over the AI training process. This move could also open new revenue streams, such as renting out compute power similar to services offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure .
In the long run, Dojo could enable Tesla to deploy fully autonomous robotaxis and enhance its software services, potentially adding significant value to the company. A report from Morgan Stanley even predicted that Dojo could boost Tesla’s market value by $500 billion.
Current Progress and Future Plans
Tesla began production on Dojo in mid-2023 and expects it to be one of the world’s top five most powerful supercomputers by October 2024. The company has committed substantial resources to this project, including $500 million to build a Dojo supercomputer at its gigafactory in Buffalo, New York.
