How does an elite team like the Springboks consistently achieve world-class performance? Recently, I had the privilege of learning from Head of Performance Andy Edwards and South African Rugby Union referee Jaco Peyper, who shared insights on building a resilient, high-performance team.
BALANCING PHYSICALITY AND STRATEGY
Rugby is an intense, physical sport, and the Springboks embrace this with a warrior-like approach. Yet, they operate with a conscious awareness of boundaries. They practice “playing on the edge”—pushing physical limits without overstepping into foul play. This disciplined edge combines strength with the tactical and technical mastery that drives their game. The lesson here extends to all performance environments: boundaries aren’t restrictive; they’re essential to honing discipline and respect in pursuit of excellence.
LEARNING FROM OTHER SPORTS
The Springboks are avid learners, drawing inspiration from diverse sources, including NFL teams and Formula One. A key takeaway from Formula One, for example, is the art of race-day coordination. Much like a Grand Prix team, where each member’s precision is vital, the Springboks apply meticulous planning across logistics, communication, and training. The focus is not only on individual excellence but also on synchronized teamwork that allows each player to perform optimally under pressure.
THE PERFORMANCE BALANCE SHEET
Choosing the “right” player isn’t just about technical skill; it’s about selecting individuals suited to specific roles and dynamics within the team. The concept of a “performance balance sheet” means considering each player’s strengths, adaptability, and readiness. This nuanced approach allows the Springboks to build balanced teams that can perform effectively under any circumstances, highlighting the value of a tailored team strategy over a one-size-fits-all approach.
BUILDING CULTURE THROUGH DIVERSITY
Today’s Springboks are a richly diverse group, with members speaking multiple languages and coming from varied backgrounds. Embracing this diversity has strengthened the team’s unity and broadened their approach to collaboration. Their cultural motto, “Our Way,” emphasizes resilience, adaptability, and community focus. This philosophy fosters cohesion and adaptability, creating a foundation where every player is valued, understood, and motivated.
THE COACH-ATHLETE CONNECTION
A significant aspect of the Springboks’ success lies in the empathetic relationships between coaches and players. Rather than just pushing players harder, coaches prioritize sustainable growth through balance. Rest, recovery, and candid conversations about injuries are essential to long-term development. By understanding each player’s unique goals, coaches help them strive for personal milestones beyond the team’s expectations, cultivating intrinsic motivation.

PLANNING AND REFLECTION
Every stage of the Springboks’ schedule, from day-to-day drills to post-game analyses, is carefully orchestrated. Training is comprehensive, combining physical conditioning, technical skill-building, and reflective self-assessment. Players review footage, analyze performance, and engage in honest self-reflection. This structured process of feedback creates a loop of continuous improvement, reinforcing the philosophy, “I am because we are.”
SUPPORTING PLAYERS AT EVERY LEVEL
When players return to their local clubs, they remain connected through a national interest framework. This ensures coordinated schedules that prevent burnout and support sustainable performance. Even away from national duties, players are aligned with the Springbok ethos, benefiting from an integrated approach that balances club and country commitments.
CREATING A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT
The Springboks know that cultivating psychological safety is key to performance. Each player must feel supported, open to honest feedback, and able to engage in constructive conversations. This open environment allows for frank discussions about performance, growth, and even short-term setbacks, ensuring each player’s well-being and long-term contributions to the team’s success.
SUMMARY:
- Discipline and strategic boundaries drive performance.
- Learning from other sports enhances teamwork and planning.
- Diversity and cultural identity strengthen unity.
- Empathy and rest are central to sustainable high performance.
- Reflection and feedback foster continuous improvement.
- Integrated national-club frameworks support players at all levels.
