Inside PCM: Jack Chaplin

Jack Chaplin's career at Porsche Centre Melbourne started in 2016, initially as a part-time concierge while he was studying Product Design and Mechanical Engineering. Although Jack had always enjoyed automotive work and motorsport as a hobby, his professional interest deepened after he decided to pursue an apprenticeship. “Seeing how the workshop operated and functioned, adding a Motorsport team into the mix, I knew it would be a solid foundation for my learning and progression," Jack explains. Motivated by his goal to become a top motorsport technician, he completed his training and qualified as a technician four years later, continuing to build his career at PCM.

During his apprenticeship, Jack worked closely with industry veterans such as Matt Walton, Dallas Brooks, Jesse and Brian Hammond, and Carrera Cup Hall of Famer Karl Batson. "Being able to learn and be taught by these guys who collectively have over 100+ years’ experience, has been a huge influence on how I perform today," he notes. His role evolved from basic tasks such as fitting tyres and cleaning cars, to more integral responsibilities, including travelling with the team to race rounds.

2024 was a pivotal year for Jack, marked by the arrival of Harri Jones to the PCM Motorsport team and his appointment as Harri's number one mechanic. Their immediate synergy contributed to a successful season.

"It was evident even just after the first test day that Harri wasn’t going to settle for anything less than 1st," Jack recalls, underscoring Harri’s competitive spirit. His primary responsibility was to prepare and maintain the #12 car for each race, ensuring Harri could trust it to perform at the highest level.

One of the major highlights for Jack was the 2024 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, where they not only secured their first pole position but also clinched a race win. This victory was just the beginning of a series of successful races, demonstrating PCMM’s?commitment and relentless drive throughout the season.

Receiving the Mechanic of the Year award was a significant honour for Jack, though he views it as a testament to the team's collective effort. "Everyone at PCMM has contributed and played a role in winning the championship," he reflects.

In the fast-paced world of motorsport, where precision and reliability are crucial, Jack's ability to perform under pressure has been key. He values having a team that can be relied upon to execute flawless repairs during critical moments.

Reflecting on 2024, Jack sees it as a successful alignment of hard work, learning, and teamwork. Looking ahead to 2025, he is eager to build on the previous year's achievements and tackle new challenges, including preparing a new chassis and integrating support from Penske. “The #12 will be coming back faster than where we left off. 2025 is going to be big,” he anticipates.

Jack Chaplin's role at Porsche Centre Melbourne is not just a reflection of his expertise but also of the collaborative spirit that defines the team's pursuit of excellence in motorsport.
