Inside Information about LinkedIn Algorithms from LinkedIn Engineering

As some fellow Recruiters know, I have been lucky to get LinkedIn Engineering's attention to several issues on LinkedIn Recruiter and LinkedIn dot com. I am grateful to LinkedIn Engineering for reaching out, reviewing the input, and sharing "inside" information. But I have mixed feelings about things I have learned. You will find some initial feedback on my blog and in the Facebook Boolean Strings Group . I will continue sharing.

LinkedIn.com Premium (Notes they had reviewed ):

I thank Mike Santoro for exhaustive testing the search and co-brainstorming with me (we have a Messenger window open ??).

Yesterday I received detailed feedback on the document, revealing previously hidden knowledge. To summarize, they have decided that the LinkedIn dot com premium account would work fine if it shows partial or slightly wrong people search results (of which some examples are in the Notes) - but fast.

I trust that most LinkedIn premium members are satisfied with its many functions and look up people by name as the only use for search. But there is a population relying on the advanced people search. How many Recruiters with a premium account realize they are getting partial results?

LinkedIn Recruiter (Notes they had reviewed , Marcel van der Meer 's and mine).

  1. They have fixed a bug I had reported showing about extra ~400M profiles that "could not be found." The search results numbers got back to normal fast, just before Thanksgiving.
  2. They admit that they need to handle timeouts gracefully (which happen for "heavy" searches) and are working on it.
  3. We got an explanation of how the Skills search works (not like you think, see my blog).
  4. The document has an open issues list, and I expect a follow-up from Dan, an Engineering Director, a designated contact person.

We are upgrading our training materials to reflect the new knowledge. First comes a reworked LinkedIn Recruiter Mastery on Wednesday, December 21st – please sign up now if you are interested. Limited seating.

P.S. A recent LinkedIn X-Ray webinar recording is available on our site. For this one, your payments go to help Ukraine.

Irina Shamaeva, I wonder how to approach the skills and assessments section. Look at the case as an example. I want to find a person with a few skills. One of them is the skill "REST APIs". Every skill was chosen from the list. I run the search and I received f.g. this person as the result?https://pl.linkedin.com/in/michalarchacki You won't find f.g. "REST APIs" in the skills section. Moreover, you don't find the phrase on his profile! Only where I found the term "REST" it was included as the word in "inteRESTs" which is additional section below every profile. On the contrary, I run a boolean in the section: "REST APIs" AND "SOAP" AND "JSON" AND "JSON WEB Token" AND "JSON-RPC" > I got 5 results. In the history, I noticed that Linkedin put additional quotes in the beginning and at the end of the boolean. It looks ""REST APIs" AND "SOAP" AND "JSON" AND "JSON WEB Token" AND "JSON-RPC"". So, any approach isn't reliable > choosing skills from the list doesn't guarantee as seeing skills in the section or any of them. Running a boolean in the skills section is totally broken. For me, we have to resign searching from the skills and assessments section. Maybe, you have different thoughts :)?
