Over the past 12 months, we have witnessed a remarkable convergence of government support, private sector innovation, and global commitment to electrification. From massive infrastructure investments to regulatory milestones, the EV charging landscape has undergone a shift that promises to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuel-dependent transportation.

Our year-end edition takes you through the most significant milestones of each month that have defined the EV charging industry in 2024 and the notable EV charging infrastructure investments.

The biggest EV charging industry stories in 2024

?January 2024 ?

  • Biden Administration Releases $623M in CFI Grants marking the largest US funding announcement of the year. The funding will support 47 projects and 7,500 charging ports, with a particular emphasis on developing community-oriented charging infrastructure.
  • France Hits Public Charging Milestone with 120,354 public charge points, marking a 41% increase in one year, while its fast charging growth has expanded from 9% to 17% of total installations.

  • Electra Secures €304M Funding. This record-breaking European charging sector investment, led by Eurazeo and RAID, will support plans to establish 15,000 charging points by 2030.
  • IONNA Network Launch Approved A joint venture of seven major automakers received approval to develop 30,000 high-powered charging stations that will support both NACS and CCS connectors.

  • Tesla 's $500M Charging Network Investment. Despite recent layoffs, the company announced major expansion plans with a focus on improving network reliability and expansion.
  • EU-China Trade Tensions. The EU's consideration of 25-30% tariffs on Chinese EVs and the US announcement of 100% tariffs has prompted China to threaten retaliatory measures.

? June 2024 ?

  • Germany Mandates Fast Charging at Gas Stations. Starting January 1, 2028, large petrol station companies will be required to provide at least one fast-charging point with a minimum capacity of 150 kilowatts at their station.
  • Gireve which connects over 500,000 charging points across 35 countries and processes over 100 million charging sessions annually, has secured €20M from Partech's Impact Fund and existing shareholders to develop new services including Plug & Charge and Clearing solutions.

  • California's Comprehensive EV Push. The state announced a multi-faceted initiative allocating $32M for 458 fast chargers and $242M for low-income EV subsidies, while Los Angeles plans 10,000 streetlight chargers and $500M will support 1,000 zero-emission school buses.

  • EVgo secured a $1.25B DOE loan to install 7,500 new DC fast chargers, planning to triple its network to 10,000 stalls by 2029 through a five-year deployment starting in 2025.
  • 壳牌 Recharge Solutions will transfer its home and workplace charging operations to 50five across six European markets while maintaining its public charging network of approximately 70,000 charge points in the UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg.


Notable EV Charging Infrastructure Investments 2024

Electra (France) Raised €304 million in Series C funding, led by Eurazeo and RAID, to grow its ultra-fast charging network across Europe.

Powerdot (Europe) Powerdot secured €100 million for the European expansion of EV charging.?

Eldrive (Eastern Europe) Raised €35 million in growth capital to expand fast-charging networks in Bulgaria, Romania, and Lithuania.
