One in Ten Brits Would Forego Food Before Internet Connection

One in ten Brits would cut back on food or heating rather than be disconnected from the internet, a new study by digital inclusion charity Good Things Foundation revealed.

The research shows just how vital Brits consider being connected to the internet is to their everyday lives, as the cost-of-living crisis continues to heap strain on the nation.

Nearly half (45%) of Brits would find it harder to manage their household finances without the internet while four in ten (42%) would find it tougher to pay their bills.

Home Secretary Airs Deepfake Woes Before Silicon Valley Meet Up

The UK home secretary James Cleverly warned about the potential impact of deepfake videos generated using artificial intelligence (AI) being used to sway voters.?

The warning comes ahead of Cleverly’s meetings with leaders in Silicon Valley this week, which was organised in response to the growing challenges around misinformation, digital fraud, and digital exploitation and crime.

As the UK gears up for its upcoming general election around October this year, Cleverly emphasised the looming threat posed by hostile countries, which could flood social media with convincing deepfake videos in an attempt to sway public opinion.?

Bumble Cuts 37% of Workforce, Laying Off 350 Workers

Bumble, the online dating app, has announced that it will layoff 350 employees, equating to about 37% of its workforce.

The news comes as Bumble reveals its fourth quarter and full year 2023 results, which fell much below expectations on Wall Street. The company had a net loss of £32 million, making £273.6m in revenue. The dismal posting, tied with a poor 2024 first quarter forecast, has sent Bumble’s stock down about 10%.

“Today, we announced solid full-year results and a bold plan to transform Bumble and lead the company to its next phase of growth and innovation,” said Lidiane Jones, CEO of Bumble Inc.

UK and France Announce AI Safety Partnership

A new funding boost to research collaboration and a new partnership to further global AI safety are part of measures announced by the UK and France.

The French Minister for higher education and research Sylvie Retailleu is meeting with Secretary of State Michelle Donelan for the first time since the UK reaffirmed their association to Horizon Europe after Brexit.

“The links between the UK and France’s brightest minds are deep and longstanding, from breakthroughs in aerospace to tackling climate change,” UK secretary of state Michelle Donelan said.

Meta’s Pay-or-Consent Model Under GDPR Fire

Meta’s new subscription model in the EU is coming under direct fire for violations of GDPR, with a new lawsuit brought up by eight consumer groups across Europe.

In a controversial move last year, Meta introduced a payment option to users of Facebook and Instagram, offering an ad-free experience for a price. The ad-free experience – which costs users €9.99/month on web or €12.99/month on mobile – prevents users from seeing any advertisements on the platforms.

Those who do not opt to pay, however, will continue to have their data collected, tracked, and sold to third parties.
