Inside the Auction of Andre Leon Talley: A Look at the Life and Legacy of a Black, Big, Tall, and Gay Fashion Pioneer

As Black History Month approaches, the auction of Andre Leon Talley's personal effects at Christie's has captured the attention of many, including those drawn to celebrity culture's glitz and glamour. Talley, a larger-bodied, black, gay fashion icon, has shaken up the fashion industry for decades, and his legacy and impact extend far beyond his personal possessions.
It's worth noting that despite his larger-than-life stature, Talley was a man with longings and desires. The surprising candid nudes done by artist Charles James which are part of his collection, reveal an authentic and human side of him amidst his belongings.
Talley injected his blackness, maleness, queerness, and size into the composition of his collection in a nuanced way that allowed him to occupy space beyond the clothes he wore. My archiving nature makes me look for these details. Talley's collection reflects his professional achievements; it's also a way to see the humanity in someone by walking through their belongings. I endeavor, as I hope others will embrace his humanity.
As we continue to celebrate Black History Month and strive for greater diversity and inclusivity in all areas of life, let us not forget the unique and trailblazing journey of Andre Leon Talley as a black, big, tall, and gay fashion icon. His voice should continue to be heard in the industry and beyond.
