Hey everyone, I’m Brian The Mac Man, and you're reading the 5th edition of our journey through Apple Intelligence!
Thank you so much to all ~70,000 subscribers so far!
I missed a couple issues while traveling this summer with my family and I hope you are finding time to enjoy some special moments with your family and friends too!
Now let’s bite into the Apple so to speak…
Apple Adding AI to Vision Pro: Future Device to Be More Affordable
Apple’s Vision Pro is already a tech marvel, but integrating AI? That’s a game-changer! AI will enhance user experiences by adapting to individual preferences in real time. And guess what? Apple’s working on a more affordable version of this headset, hoping to release for a broader audience in 2025 (I could see this getting pushed to 2026). Expect lower-quality screens, less expensive materials, but still retaining that magical Apple touch and integration within the ecosystem.
Rumors of a New Apple AI Home Accessory
Rumor mill for Apple is always going strong as the company does such a great job keeping future projects under wraps! Word on the street is Apple’s cooking up a new home device. Imagine a next-gen HomePod, but smarter with AI integrations and more powerful with the latest chips and more memory. This potential robotic home assistant could focus more on AI-driven tasks and conversations rather than just playing music. It might even include a screen for FaceTime calls and Apple TV+ integration, essentially making it a command center for your smart home.
Apple Likely to Add Google Partnership to Get Gemini on iOS 18
Apple might team up with Google to integrate Gemini AI into iOS 18. This collaboration could supercharge your iPhone, making it smarter and more intuitive (along with options to use ChatGPT). Combining Apple’s design with Google’s AI prowess? That’s a match made in tech heaven. And more choices for the consumer is a win!
Apple Gets Board Observer Seat at OpenAI
Big moves (but not…)! Apple snagged a board observer seat at OpenAI as part of a deal to integrate ChatGPT into iOS 18 (and of note - neither side has paid anything to establish this partnership). Phil Schiller from Apple’s leadership team was planning to be attending board meetings, absorbing all the cutting-edge AI insights. Then things changed and the board observer seat is going away… anyone else surprised OpenAI flip-flopping of Apple having a seat at the table?
In other AI news…
Microsoft Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Talk about timing - Microsoft stepped down from the OpenAI board over antitrust concerns just as Apple was about to step in (but isn’t anymore). AI boundaries and competition remains lively.
AI Growth Beyond the US: China's Rapid Advancements
AI isn’t just booming stateside - China is making waves too… At China’s annual AI conference, SenseTime claimed they're outperforming ChatGPT-4 on five of eight benchmarks. This highlights how rapidly Chinese AI companies are advancing, reminding us that the AI race is truly global. The stakes are high, and the competition is heating up. China is able to find workarounds for all the restrictions that the US is placing on them, both making more chips within China and finding ways to push previous chips to their max potential.
Prediction on the Survival of LLMs
Yan Junjie, the founder of Shanghai’s AI start-up MiniMax, predicts only about five out of the 200+ large language models (LLMs) will survive. Bold call, right? This makes you think about the future of AI - will it be dominated by a few giants, or is there room for newcomers to shine? As we watch the AI world evolve at breakneck speed, how many major player do we think will survive?
