[Insert Interesting, Compelling Year-End Fundraising Resources Article Title Here]

Now that I’m more on the research, teaching, and training side of things, there’s a big piece of me that really misses the year-end fundraising crunch/chaos (for real).

I know, for me at least, there was always a bit of let off once the final direct mail appeal was out and pre-Christmas email was scheduled. But the reality is — whether you want to hear it or not — there’s still a lot of giving yet to come which means there’s still more work to be done.

For example, did you know that 27.5% of all online year-end giving happens in the last 3 days of the year? And 15.5% happens on December 31st alone?

That's what our benchmark data says but don’t fret because I have a bunch of free resources for you today to make this critical time of year just a little bit easier.

Here you go…

12 Days of Year-End Fundraising Ideas [Blog & Video Series]

First up is the 12 Days of Year-End Fundraising video series where different members of our team share a short video with actionable tips for you while someone pops up in a blow-up Christmas tree or gingerbread man costume.

Today, for example, is day 9 of 12 and Rebekah Josefy (no relation) talks about sending emails when others aren’t to stand out in a crowded inbox. You can check out that video and/or watch them all here: https://www.nextafter.com/the-12-days-of-year-end-fundraising-blog/

Adding Trust Marks on Your Donation Form [Research]

One key factor when it comes to online giving (particularly at year-end) is trust. Trust in the security of the website, donation page, and form, of course, but also trust in the organization itself and its ability to deliver on their mission.

One of the ways you can build trust in your online giving experience is to use a ‘trustmark’ or an ‘external validator’ like the Charity Navigator seal on your donation page.

A few years ago, the good folks at DonorVoice did some research in this area and discovered that some external validator outperformed no validator and the Charity Navigator seal was the ‘best’ (read about that research here).

This is something we look at in our research and experimentation as well. In fact, we just published this new one where the addition of the seal increased giving 64% (albeit with a small sample and only 91.7% confidence.

Interview with Michael Thatcher of Charity Navigator [Podcast]

And speaking of Charity Navigator… cough…segue… cough… I recently had the chance to chat with Michael Thatcher, CEO of Charity Navigator, to discuss their updated Encompass ratings, related merger/acquisition of ImpactMatters, and his experience as a dancer and oceanographic researcher (true story).

I really enjoyed it and I think you will too. You can listen in here, https://www.nextafter.com/charity-eval/, or wherever you listen to podcasts, just search ‘The Generosity Freakshow’.

The Recurring Gift Prompt (And Tools to Implement It)

One of the coolest parts about doing research and sharing experiments is to hear what people are actually doing because of them. We get emails all the time where people say, “we tried it and it works” or “we tested it and we do that all the time now” and it makes our day (so please, send us those emails!).

But there’s something extra cool when product companies see the research and then build some of our tested ideas into their products because that means ALL their customers can use some of these cool, proven tactics. And they often don’t have to do too much to take advantage of it.

For example, iDonate recently rolled out a recurring gift prompt feature based on some of our experiments to help organizations secure more recurring donors without a) losing one-time donors and b) needing to do too much else (FWIW, I know RaiseDonors has some ability to do this and Fundraise Up has a prompt built into their tool as well).

This idea — using a recurring gift prompt during a one-time donation experience — is 1 of 10 ideas in this post, 10 Year-End Fundraising Ideas to Actually Grow Your Revenue.

Increasing Revenue the Last Week of the Year

And if you’re wanting more year-end ideas (and you should as 27.5% of all online, year-end giving comes in the last 3 days according to our benchmark data), we put together a free guide full of data, tips, and ideas to help you Maximize Your Online Fundraising Revenue During the Last Week of the Year that you can get here: https://www.nextafter.com/maximize-your-online-fundraising/.

And if you're skimming this email, here are the key links/resources to help you this week:

I hope they help and good luck!

Cheers,

B

PS. In case you were wondering, “what does a fundraising researcher/teacher/trainer do at year-end?”, last week the answer was spending way too much time converting the most common minimum, maximum & pre-selected one-time gift array amounts of 585 orgs in 9 different countries to USD equivalent and then dividing by their Gross National Income per Capita to do analysis for an upcoming research study.
