The Insanity of Normalcy

The Insanity of Normalcy

Read this to...

  1. To wake up.
  2. To realize that normal doesn't mean optimal.

Just because something is normal does not mean it is optimal, healthy, nourishing, enriching... it doesn't mean it is serving you.

In the 21st century, if people don't think you're weird, chances are you're living sub-optimally.

What is normal?

As you read through this list, ask yourself: Is this behavior serving me?

  1. Eating animal protein.
  2. Drinking alcohol.
  3. Being addicted to smartphones.
  4. Sitting for 8 hours a day.
  5. Watching media, movies, television.
  6. Being distracted.
  7. Being prescribed to a drug.
  8. Hugging people for a duration of less than 1 second.
  9. Eating while working.
  10. Staying indoors for most of the day.
  11. Taking photos of yourself obsessively.
  12. Excessively consuming sugar.
  13. Consuming large amounts of caffeine.
  14. Living with an erratic sleep schedule.
  15. Buying things that don't make you happy long-term.
  16. Suppressing emotions and avoiding confrontation.
  17. Prioritizing work over personal relationships.
  18. People-pleasing & saying yes.
  19. Thinking about the past.
  20. Blaming external circumstances for personal shortcomings.

(Any to add to the list? Comment below.)

As we move into the 21st century, my advice to you is to not look to the average for guidance on how to live your life well.

It seems to me that self-sabotage is being accelerated by technology and media — which enables unhealthy insane norms to spread.

So what do you do?

Find the people who positively influence you and inspire you to be weird.

The end.

Great reflection, Jacques. Humanity reveals many gaps in what we consider "normal". One can see it everywhere in media, and in all human relations. All these are pulling our attention the outer world, taking away the time we could spend on analyzing our own lives, thoughts and emotions and finding the root cause of them. I would just add a comment to the last statement. Being inspired is fine. Being influenced means that one is dragged by thoughts of others, therefore not thinking clearly himself. When mind of one is clear, seeing root of a situation or problem, there is nothing and no one able to move or influence such mind. Just my humble subjective opinion ??
