An Inquiry Meditation

An Inquiry Meditation

Safety is not the absence of threat but the presence of connection

- Gabor Mate

Starting a new week with a self-inquiry meditation can set a powerful tone for the days ahead.

Self-inquiry involves being curious about 'the obvious'. It takes a few moments to sit quietly, to center yourself, and to turn your focus inward.

Rhetorical questioning...

You can do this by simply asking yourself a few rhetorical questions, for example:

  • How am I feeling?
  • What am I feeling?
  • Where am I feeling it?
  • What is my intention (this week)?
  • What aspects of myself do I wish to honor (in the coming days, weeks, and months ahead)?

Allow these questions to gently guide your thoughts and observe the answers that arise without judgment or attachment. Note, you are not thinking about your responses, you are simply allowing whatever arises to arise within.

By dedicating time to self-inquiry at the start of each week, for example, you create a habit of mindful reflection and conscious living. This practice then encourages you to stay connected with your inner self amidst 'the busyness' of the mundane day-to-day stuff, fostering a sense of purpose and clarity.

Who am I?

What to notice...

The word 'notice' in mindfulness and emotional intelligence literature (Kabat-Zinn, 2013: Goleman, 1996; Freedman, 2019)) refers to 'the subtle', or those things we easily by-pass and walk past as we move on to other 'important' things. The subtle refers to

  • Sensations in the body easily ignored
  • A lingering thought in the back of the mind
  • A feeling parked in the background
  • Words uttered and/or spoken without thought - often heard after you've said them
  • The voice of Super-ego, playing away 'behind' the scenes
  • Unconscious body movements,
  • The sound of silence you hear when you stop and listen to nothing

When you engage in self-inquiry meditation, including paying some attention to the list above, you may find, amongst other things, that you begin to navigate challenges with greater ease and make decisions that are more in tune with your true self.

Ultimately, this meditative practice empowers you to live each week, day, and moment, with attention, intention, authenticity, and a deeper connection to your self through your body.
