Get to know: Freddie Batista, Product Engineer at inploi

Why did you join inploi?

People say it’s always professionally best to find a niche and specialise. I was at my second job as a software engineer for fintech companies and could not feel less accomplished: I was feeling like a cog in the machine, like my work lacked purpose.

As a fully remote worker for an American company back then, I was invited by my good friend and product manager, Nico, to come and work from the inploi headquarters for a change of scenery. I felt so at home, so welcomed by everyone, and got to know and admire the product being built there. Serendipity acted and now I’m here building and vibing with them!

What does your role look like on a day-to-day basis?

Every day is unique in its own way: as a product engineer I often have to think design, code and product all in the same day. I think it works really well to keep your brain and ideas working. I engage a lot with the product managers to help prioritise and describe tasks to be done, but also do a lot of coding and designing with the team. We work on maintaining our current products but also have been building some incredibly exciting stuff I can’t wait to share!

What tech are you most excited about right now?

I’m going deep in sync engines currently. It’s something we will need very soon for a product we’re building and it can offer many user experience advantages. A sync engine is what allows you to, say, edit a page in Google Docs even when you’re offline and others are editing it as well, and when you next come online, some form of conflict resolution decides whose changes will be applied on top. It’s one of those invisible technologies that just work but when they’re missing you really feel it.

What do you do outside of work?

A few months ago I would say "build side projects" and present you with a few, but recently I've been trying to get away from the digital world a little bit. I’ve started reading a lot of fiction books — highly recommend “Klara and the Sun” by the way, it’s an incredible read — and started cycling now and then through Hampstead Heath. I'm a coffee addict so trying out new coffee places is always on the menu too!
