Innovators in Medicine.....

"Many ideas grow better when transplanted into another mind than in the one they sprang up" - Oliver Wendell Holmes

In case you didn't know, the gentleman quoted above Oliver Wendell Holmes is known for many things, one of them is coining the term "Anesthesia". In 1846 he wrote a letter to Dr. William Morton after hearing of Dr. Morton's public demonstration of ether for a painless dental procedure and suggested the word as the term for the technique. He also predicted that "anesthesia" would be a word used throughout history....he was right and he effectively transplanted his idea to the world, securing Oliver's footnote to Dr. Morton's advance for all of time.

News quickly spread around the globe of Dr. Morton's advance in medicine and soon there were surgeries all over the world performing this technique with ether.

Team, think about this for a minute, 175 years later we are still advancing the patient's experience and working to further improve outcomes. Pioneering doctors and nurses have led the charge over the years and industry has partnered to help bring new technology to the theater of medicine.

Over the last couple of weeks, you have seen picture after picture of our technology used in Operating Rooms - Open Hearts, transplants, Colorectal cases, and many others. Accuryn is being used by Anesthesiologists, Perfusionists, Surgeons, Nurses and the system is helping the teams to protect the kidney. The Intra-Abdominal Pressure signal is helping our clinicians to understand and "see" effects of surgery, ventilators, fluids in real time both during the surgery and after. The accuracy of the Urine Output measurement is allowing precision fluid guidance and protecting the kidney both intra and post-Op, and core temperature is on the money. And if you watch all 3 together it paints a pretty interesting picture. Take a look for yourself:

Check out the trend lines of each signal - you can "see" surgery - when the abdomen is insufflated, Core Temp fluctuates slightly, and the kidneys perform as expected. How amazing is that? How cool is it to be a part of a technology change that will help so many people? We are truly the fortunate few and regardless of challenges that are presented to us, we will overcome and forever change surgery.

Oh, and to be expected any major advance in surgery of note would not be without controversy. It was argued that Dr. Crawford Long in Atlanta, GA was actually the first to use the ether technique 4 years earlier in Atlanta, but wasn't able to publish his work until 1849, 3 years after Dr. Morton's public demonstration....

Don't you just love our field of business!! Have a great day team!!

ALWAYS FORWARD!!!

I love this story as well as Omar M. Khateeb’s anecdote about being “a dime among pennies.” So much of what we do is perception—not just what others perceive about what we do or say, but what we perceive about ourselves. Sometimes what we say or do doesn’t have the immediate impact we’d like it to. But if we can have a true, lasting impact on just one person—that makes it all worth it.

Oliver Wendell Holmes once attended a meeting in which he was the shortest man present. A friend remarked “Dr. Holmes I should think you’d feel rather small among us big fellows.” “I do,” retorted Holmes, “I feel like a dime among a lot of pennies.”
