Innovative Ways to Reframe Mental Health in Entrepreneurship: Lessons from the Imperfectly Perfect Campaign

By Glenn Marsden, Founder of the Imperfectly Perfect Campaign.

As someone who has had the privilege of speaking on international stages and engaging with networks across the world, I've seen first-hand how the narrative around mental health, especially in entrepreneurship, is evolving. But there’s still work to be done. Mental health and entrepreneurship are often treated as two separate spheres, when in reality, they are deeply intertwined. The Imperfectly Perfect Campaign, which has reached over 12 million lives globally, was born from a need to bring these discussions to the forefront. In doing so, I’ve learned a lot about how we can reshape the conversation.

The Power of Storytelling

When I first launched the Imperfectly Perfect Campaign, the goal was simple: create a space where mental health is discussed openly, without the stigmas attached. What I didn’t anticipate was how powerful storytelling would become in this mission. Over 500 public figures from across industries, from Australia to Hollywood, have shared their personal experiences with mental health, and this has created a ripple effect. In entrepreneurship, where stress, burnout, and mental health struggles are often part of the journey, storytelling is an innovative tool to foster connection and support.

I’ve spoken on stages across the world, sharing these stories and how vulnerability can be a strength in business. Entrepreneurs need to understand that acknowledging struggles doesn’t make you weak; it makes you relatable. It brings people closer to your mission, whether it's your team, your clients, or your community.

Breaking the Stigma in High-Pressure Environments

In entrepreneurship, the pressure to succeed is immense. Too often, mental health challenges are seen as obstacles to overcome privately, for fear of appearing incapable. But here's the truth I’ve come to understand, both from my personal experiences and from leading the Imperfectly Perfect Campaign: success isn’t just about outward achievements; it’s about inner well-being.

Through the campaign, I’ve had the honour of collaborating with world-renowned influencers, celebrities, and international organisations, all committed to shifting the mental health narrative. One of the most innovative approaches we’ve seen is recognising that mental health is a critical business asset. When entrepreneurs prioritise their mental health, they not only improve their well-being but also create healthier, more sustainable businesses. This message has resonated strongly when I speak to audiences across global platforms, because it flips the traditional narrative of hustle culture on its head.

Creating a Culture of Inclusivity and Authenticity

One of the most significant achievements of the Imperfectly Perfect Campaign has been its ability to foster a culture of inclusivity. Entrepreneurs often feel the need to fit a specific mould—constantly pushing boundaries, never showing vulnerability. But my experience speaking on international platforms has shown me that people are craving authenticity.

When I talk about mental health and entrepreneurship, I emphasise that the most successful leaders are those who bring their full selves to the table—flaws and all. Creating an environment where mental health is openly discussed and valued is a game-changer. Not only does it build trust within teams, but it also sets the foundation for long-term success. This is something I drive home in every keynote, workshop, or summit I’m a part of.

The Future of Mental Health in Entrepreneurship

Through the Imperfectly Perfect Campaign, I’ve been able to shine a light on how vital mental health is to personal and professional success. From launching international bestselling book series to collaborating with global organisations, we’ve created a movement that impacts millions. But this is only the beginning. As the conversation continues to grow, I believe the future of entrepreneurship will be built on the foundation of mental health awareness.

In every talk I give, I encourage entrepreneurs to view mental health as a core component of their success strategy. When you create space for mental health in your entrepreneurial journey, you not only strengthen yourself but also inspire those around you to do the same.

As a speaker, entrepreneur, and mental health advocate, I’m committed to continuing this dialogue, using innovative approaches to change how we think about mental health in business. Let’s break the stigma and create a future where entrepreneurship and mental well-being go hand in hand.

I look forward to sharing more insights on stages around the world, inspiring others to embrace both their entrepreneurial drive and their mental health with equal passion.
