Innovative Kiwi Brands: The Motherhood Journey
Natalie Woodbridge
Co-Founder and CEO of FurBrains - building a world where children’s companions are more than toys
Everyone said that time would fly on the journey of motherhood, to soak it up and enjoy every moment of it and they were absolutely right. It feels like just yesterday that I was navigating the path of pregnancy. Now, with Ziara already eight months old, I realise just how true that is.
As a proud supporter of New Zealand businesses, I eagerly embraced the opportunity to use products made by some of the best companies in the country during pregnancy, postpartum, and the early days of parenthood. My experience has reaffirmed my belief in the exceptional quality, outstanding customer service, and true innovation of New Zealand brands.
My personal connection to some of these businesses stems from their participation in the 2degrees Auckland Business Awards, where many have become finalists and winners. Supporting these businesess has always been important to me, and it was a great opportunity to try out their products during this stage of my life.
This isn't a paid advertisement; it’s genuinely me sharing the fantastic NZ businesses and products that have enriched our journey and an opportunity to celebrate some of the standout products and businesses that made a significant difference in our lives.
Haakaa: The Innovation Leader
From the moment I found out I was pregnant, Haakaa was at the top of my shopping list. The Haakaa breast pump, with its simple yet effective design, quickly became an essential item for me. While I also used an electric pump, the flagship Haakaa Silicone Pump was a must-have in my hospital bag and something I used daily. Initially, I was curious about how it would work, but even in the hospital, nurses were asking about it and where to get one. It's surprising that this product isn't more well-known among healthcare providers because it truly is amazing—affordable, user-friendly, portable, and incredibly efficient. It made those early breastfeeding days so much easier.
But Haakaa isn’t just about breast pumps. Their extensive range includes natural bath products and solid-to-liquid massage oils, which provided gentle and nourishing care for Ziara. Their fresh food feeder was fantastic for introducing new foods to her and even doubled as a pain reliever during teething when I used it with frozen breast milk. Haakaa's teething products and handy food storage pouches have been great on countless occasions. They truly cater to every phase of the parenting journey.
Haakaa’s innovative approach to product design and commitment to quality is why they won Excellence in Innovation in the Business Awards. I also noticed their new Honeyze Manuka Honey Drops, which can help combat morning sickness. I wish I had discovered during my pregnancy.
The first products I bought for myself when I found out I was pregnant were from Haakaa, and they’ve been a daily staple ever since. Haakaa truly understands the needs of mothers and babies, making life a little easier and a lot more comfortable.
Grin Natural Products: Safe and Effective
When it comes to oral care, Grin Natural Products is a brand I was already familiar with and planned to use for Ziara when she got her teeth. They are an incredible company that is truly changing how we look after our teeth globally. During pregnancy, hormonal changes can increase the risk of dental issues such as gingivitis, making it even more crucial to maintain good oral hygiene. Additionally, I believe it is essential to clean your baby’s gums from birth to remove bacteria and establish a healthy routine for when teeth emerge.
Ziara has just had her first two little teeth pop through, so we’ve only recently started using their toothpaste, but I’ve been a fan for a while. Their commitment to natural ingredients and effective formulations ensured that both my oral health and Ziara’s were well taken care of. In fact, Grin’s toothpaste was the only one I could use during pregnancy, as many others made me feel nauseous.
I used both their baby and children’s toothbrush on Ziara right from when she was a newborn to get her used to it and to keep her gums healthy. Now that she has her first two teeth, she enjoys when I brush her teeth using their toothbrush and toothpaste, and it makes the process really easy.
I want Ziara to have a healthy and positive outlook on cleaning her teeth as she grows up, and making it part of her routine from day one was important to me. Grin’s baby toothbrushes are gentle yet effective, making them perfect for Ziara’s tiny teeth and gums. Their dedication to providing safe and effective oral care products has made a significant difference in our lives.
Natalie Brady Nutrition: Personal Health Hero
Nutrition is so important, especially during pregnancy and postpartum. I had been following Natalie Brady Nutrition on social media for quite a while and she had heaps of tips and recipes that were really handing during pregnancy. Postpartum I went to see Natalie so I was able to ensure I had the energy and nutrients to care for myself and Ziara, which was really important while I continued to work and had a newborn.
Natalie’s personalised approach was really valuable, she was really easy to talk to and her knowledge around pregnancy and postpartum nutritional care was unbelievable. Her guidance helped me navigate changes I needed to make to my diet and made a significant difference in my overall well-being. She has recently released a pregnancy e-book, her commitment to her clients’ health and wellness is truly inspiring, making her a standout in the field of nutrition.
Capturing Memories: Belinda Bullock and Natalie Petelo Photography
Capturing the magic of motherhood was essential, and both Belinda Bullock and Natalie Petelo delivered beyond my expectations. Belinda isn’t a traditional maternity photographer, her focus is more corporate and creative, in fact she has taken photos of all the staff at the Chamber and our Judges for the Business Awards, but she perfectly captured "me" in my maternity photos. Her ability to bring out the best in her subjects and create stunning, personalised photos is unmatched.
Then, when Ziara was just 10 days old, Natalie Petelo worked her magic. Turned out we had actually met years ago through her previous employer, who was a sponsor at the awards, so for me connecting and supporting her business was wonderful. She was unbelievably kind and caring, making the photoshoot a warm and memorable experience. The photos she captured during those early days are memories I will cherish forever. Her attention to detail and genuine care for her clients and their newborns make her an exceptional photographer.
Sleepdrops: A Natural Sleep Solution
I've always prided myself on having a pretty good sleep routine and maintaining good sleep health. I was lucky enough to meet Kirsten Taylor, the founder and CEO of Sleepdrops, during her time as a Board Member for the Auckland Business Chamber. Over the years, I've learned a lot about sleep through my conversations with Kirsten. So, when I struggled with insomnia and waking up at 2:00 am during the second half of my pregnancy, unable to get back to sleep, I turned to Sleepdrops. Their natural sleep aids provided the perfect solution, helping me stay asleep and easily fall back asleep if I woke up. The gentle, natural ingredients made it a safe option during pregnancy.
Interestingly, I didn’t need them much during the newborn stage, as I was surprisingly getting good sleep, but during pregnancy, they were essential. Recently, I started using their magnesium product, which is also incredibly effective and fast-acting. The difference these products made in my sleep quality was remarkable. Using my Apple Watch, I can track my sleep patterns and determine the best times to introduce Sleepdrops before bed. I highly recommend their range of products to anyone struggling with sleep. They offer so many solutions for different sleep needs.
Delicious Support: Mama's Milkbar and Lactation Station
I was dreading the taste of lactation products, but Mama’s Milkbar and Lactation Station pleasantly surprised me. Their products are delicious! I took them with me to the hospital and ended up eating quite a few biscuits in those early days. The lactation cookies were not only tasty but also incredibly effective in supporting my milk supply.
Once home, I switched more to the drinks that the cookies, which were equally enjoyable and beneficial, plus you could use the drinks powder in baking etc. Both brands made the breastfeeding journey easier and tastier, providing essential nutritional support. The combination of great taste and effectiveness makes them stand out.
I was able to nourish my body while also enjoying the process, which made a huge difference in those early days as your milk comes in or maintaining a supply.
Two Islands Milk Maker: Nourishing Support for New Mums
I discovered Two Islands Milk Maker at the Chemist Warehouse and quickly realized it was a product designed to support breastfeeding mothers. This nourishing supplement is crafted with a blend of natural ingredients specifically chosen to enhance milk production and support overall maternal health. The thoughtfully formulated blend includes key ingredients like fenugreek, fennel, and brewer's yeast, known for their lactation-boosting properties.
What sets Two Islands Milk Maker apart is its commitment to quality and convenience. I absolutely loved their convenient tablet form that is easy to incorporate into a busy routine. I take it each morning with breakfast, making it a simple yet effective part of my daily regimen. This ensures I receive the essential nutrients and support needed during the breastfeeding journey.
Two Islands is a proud New Zealand brand that values sustainability and health. Their products are free from artificial additives and are made with the highest quality ingredients, ensuring that new mothers receive the best support possible. Whether you're just starting your breastfeeding journey or looking for a boost, Two Islands Milk Maker is an excellent choice to help nourish both you and your baby.
Skincare Essentials: Pure Mama and Ed&I body
Taking care of my skin during pregnancy and postpartum was a top priority for me. Pure Mama’s oil and magnesium rub were incredible, keeping my skin smooth and hydrated. The soothing properties of the magnesium rub provided much-needed relief from muscle aches, and the nourishing oil helped maintain my skin’s elasticity. I didn't get a single stretch mark, and I believe lathering myself in these oils morning and night played a big part in that. Pure Mama’s products truly made a difference, ensuring my skin stayed healthy and vibrant.
Ed&I body introduced me to three products that I now adore: SkinCoat, Daily Drin-C, and Morning Coffee. SkinCoat was a game-changer for my c-section scar, aiding in its healing and improving its appearance. Daily Drin-C and Morning Coffee became part of my daily routine, giving my skin a fresh start every morning.
They have released a Bump Balm now, but I was well into the newborn phase when that came out. Initially, I was a bit hesitant as I hadn’t really connected with their marketing. However, after reading positive reviews and knowing they were finalists in the People's Choice category of the awards, I decided to give them a try. It’s clear that their customers love their products, and now, so do I.
These products have become part of my morning routine, making me feel pampered and refreshed each day. I have more on my list of products that I want to try from them, like their Night Cap product and some of their beauty supplements after I finish breastfeeding.
Edwards & Co: The Perfect Stroller
The Edwards & Co Oscar MX stroller set is fantastic. They won People's Choice a couple of years ago, and it’s easy to see why their customers love them so much. Supporting a company with such a loyal customer base felt great, but also gave me a lot of confidence. Their pram is incredibly easy to use, and everything fits together seamlessly, offering convenience and comfort.
Outings with Ziara are comfortable and hassle-free, thanks to the thoughtful design of the stroller. She has even slept in the bassinet when we stayed at the Cordis Auckland several times since she was born. The versatility and ease of use of the stroller make it a real lifesaver.
The Oscar MX stroller has become an essential part of our daily routine, providing the perfect blend of functionality and style. Edwards & Co’s products have made our lives so much easier, and it’s no wonder their customers are so passionate about them.
I also purchased my SnuzKot from them, a cosleeper that has been incredibly useful, along with numerous accessories.
Your Birth Project: Empowering Resources
Your Birth Project was a great resource, offering comprehensive online courses that prepared me for childbirth. The practical advice helped me feel confident and ready for Ziara's arrival. The flexibility of the online format allowed me to learn at my own pace, making the experience stress-free and personalized.
Additionally, the Kiwi Birthtales podcast, run by the same person, was my top-listened podcast of 2023. It provided powerful insights and support alongside Your Birth Project, making the journey to motherhood less daunting. The combination of these resources made a significant difference in my preparation and overall experience.
Hatched: Convenient Prenatal Classes
Hatched offered a flexible and informative prenatal course that was perfect for our busy lives. I really didn't want to go to in person classes so the online format allowed us to go at our own pace and skip content that wasn’t relevant to my birth plan. This flexibility was incredibly valuable, allowing us to tailor the learning experience to our specific needs.
The content covered all aspects of childbirth, providing us with the knowledge and confidence we needed. Hatched made the experience convenient as well as making us feel prepared and informed for the arrival of our baby.
Jamie Kay and Nature Baby: Stylish Comfort for Ziara
Jamie Kay’s clothing ensured that Ziara was always comfortable and stylish. Their beautiful designs and soft, organic cotton materials were perfect for her sensitive skin. The attention to detail and quality craftsmanship are evident in every piece, making Jamie Kay a favourite in Ziara's wardrobe. I love dressing Ziara up, and their clothes are not only stylish but also durable, standing up to daily wear and washing.
Nature Baby is another brand that appear in Ziara’s wardrobe. Their commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices is something I really like. Nature Baby’s clothes are not only beautiful but also incredibly functional, I loved their Kimono Onesie's in the newborn phase.
I buy most of Ziara's stuff online and even though this is about New Zealand businesses their are several Australian brands that I love as well like Ziggy Lou and Arabella and Rose. Let’s just say Ziara’s wardrobe is well and truly FULL, and dressing her is one of my favourite things to do.
Kiara Cosmetics (Revitalash NZ): Postpartum Hair Gods
Postpartum hair loss is real, and Revitalash came to the rescue. I've always been a massive fan of their lash serum and have used it for years, but postpartum I found another one of their products to love: their hair products. They helped restore my hair’s thickness and strength.
The effectiveness of these products has made a significant difference in my hair’s recovery. They didn’t stop the initial hair loss, but they kickstarted new growth and made my hair feel healthy again. Revitalash’s shampoo, conditioner, and growth serum are must-haves in any mama’s postpartum kit. These products are essential for anyone looking to look after their hair after the challenges of pregnancy and postpartum
Tend Healthcare: Exceptional Care
Tend Healthcare provided outstanding medical support during my postpartum period, but their excellence extends to all GP-related healthcare needs. Their blend of convenient online and in-person options, along with a user-friendly messaging system, makes accessing care incredibly easy and efficient. The ability to get medical advice and book appointments from the comfort of my home has been a game-changer, making healthcare more accessible and stress-free.
Whether it's for routine check-ups, managing chronic conditions, or urgent medical advice, Tend's healthcare providers are not only skilled but also compassionate, making each visit reassuring and comfortable. Postpartum appointments were smooth, and Ziara’s vaccinations were handled professionally, showcasing their care approach.
The convenience of the Tend app is incredible; it allows for easy scheduling, follow-ups, and communication with healthcare providers. I encourage everyone to download the Tend App and give it a go!

This proactive approach eliminates the frustration of waiting and ensures you can plan your day effectively. Tend Healthcare is truly exceptional, offering a seamless and modern healthcare experience that is tailored to the needs of everyone, from busy parents to individuals seeking routine GP care.
Chuan Spa at the Cordis Auckland: Heavenly Pregnancy Massage Experience
Oh my God, the pregnancy massage at Chuan Spa at the Cordis Auckland is an absolute dream! From the moment I walked into the blissful environment of the spa, I felt an overwhelming sense of relaxation and comfort. The ambiance is calm and soothing, exactly what a soon-to-be mama needs.
The therapists at Chuan Spa are incredibly skilled and attentive, making sure every part of the experience is tailored to your needs, another must for any pregnant woman. It was a much-needed escape that helped me feel more so pampered, I highly recommend treating yourself to a massage at Chuan Spa.

The Sleep Store, Babies.co.nz and Dimples offered unparalleled customer service and a wide range of products that met all our needs. The Sleep Store’s advice on sleep solutions was particularly helpful, providing us with valuable tips and products to ensure better sleep for everyone.
Babies.co.nz swift delivery service ensured we had what we needed when we needed it, making shopping for baby essentials stress-free. Their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction makes them top choices for any parent. These retailers have made our journey smoother, providing excellent products and services along the way.
Mighty Ape: That Needed Express Service
Mighty Ape has been a great resource for buying baby products, they stock a lot of items and I found myself using them often, especially with their "Jungle Express" service. Whenever I needed something quickly, Mighty Ape was my go-to. Their extensive range of baby essentials ensured I could find everything in one place.
The convenience of their express service meant timely deliveries, which were so handy during the early days with Ziara when I couldn't get out and about. Their user-friendly website and excellent customer service made the shopping experience seamless. Mighty Ape's commitment to great service and fast delivery has made me a customer time, and time again.
Franjos: A Kiwi Touch from Across the Ditch
Although Franjos is an Australian company, it’s founded by Kiwis, and their products are worth mentioning. Their cookies and hydration powders were delicious and provided the extra boost needed during breastfeeding. The lactation cookies were a tasty treat that supported my milk supply, and the hydration powders kept me feeling refreshed.
The quality and taste of their products made them a delightful addition to my breastfeeding routine. Franjos' commitment to supporting new moms, combined with their delicious products, makes them a standout choice.
Emulait: Revolutionary Innovation in Baby Feeding
Although Emulait is not a New Zealand brand, their innovative approach to baby feeding is truly something to be amazed by. Based out of America, Emulait has revolutionised baby bottles, making feeding a more natural and seamless experience for both parents and babies.
The bottles mimic the natural feel and flow of breastfeeding, easing the transition between breast and bottle feeding. The nipple's shape and texture resemble a mother's breast, helping babies latch on comfortably and reducing nipple confusion. 9 个月Another business I should have added to the list is Downlights NZ - I have bought ALOT of their candles during pregnancy and postpartum. It's not a baby-related product, but made the house smell delicious when all the visitors came over! Plus I am quite a fan of the initiative behind the business. I got to know their Managing Director Jennifer Del Bel back when they entered the awards and won the Community Contribution category, plus she gives back to the community in so many ways including being one of our incredible judges.

9 个月There are a tonne of lovely NZ brands that produce merino products. My personal fav is Nature Baby so a suggested edit: Nature Baby's merino range is made with wool grown in the NZ High Country. Merino regulates bub's temperature, naturally absorbs and releases moisture, anti-bacterial and incredibly soft (won't itch). It is also shown to calm babies and improve sleep: https://www.naturebaby.co.nz/pure-merino-wool x
