Innovative Engineering: Taking the Lead in Suspension Bridge Technology
Named after the cables that suspend a roadway from main cables resting on top of high towers and secured at each end by anchorages, the suspension bridge can span distances far longer than any other type of bridge. Offering numerous benefits including strength and durability, suspension bridge?is ?the go-to choice especially when it comes to connecting spaces that cannot be bridged with conventional methods.
An attractive option, indeed, but as advanced civil engineering expertise are required, previously there were only a handful of countries capable of building suspension bridges. DL E&C secured suspension bridge technology independence, thereby placing Korea on the list of countries capable of building such bridges, starting with the Yi Sun-Sin Bridge project back in 2007.
Since then, DL E&C has sharpened its engineering techniques which has been proven by its track record of constructing 5 suspension bridges within the past 10 years. The company served as the main lead in most of these projects, equipping its engineers with the latest expertise and skills through recent field experience. In fact, DL E&C’s suspension bridges are not only sturdy and strong, but also recognized for their aesthetically pleasing designs that create graceful appearances without compromising safety.
The Yi Sun-Sin Bridge, which was completed in 2012, is the longest bridge in Korea and the first bridge to be fully built with DL E&C’s own technology as the company successfully secured the technology needed to install cables, the most important component in the construction of suspension bridges. The bridge won the ACECC Outstanding Civil Engineering Project Award, proving the company’s excellence in engineering and demonstrating its technological expertise in building special bridges.

?The Cheonsa Bridge completed in 2019, is the first three-tower suspension bridge in Korea and the country’s only bridge that uses both cable-stayed bridge and suspension bridge construction methods. DL E&C was in charge of building the second section, the suspension bridge. It is the fourth longest bridge in Korea, connecting Aphae and Amtae Islands and shortening the travel time of local residents and tourists to land from a couple of hours by sea to just 10 minutes by car.
Most recently, DL E&C participated in the 1915 Canakkale Bridge which traverses Turkey’s European and Asian shores as the longest suspension bridge in the world. Not only is it 2,023 meters long, but the distinctive red towers, which DL E&C constructed, stand 334 meters high, making it the tallest steel-frame main tower in the world, higher than France’s Eiffel Tower and Japan’s Tokyo Tower. Despite being a technically challenging project, the 1915 Canakkale Bridge was awarded the ECCS European Steel Bridge Award, recognized for its ability to withstand?earthquakes and harsh weather conditions with exceptional stability.
