Innovations For A Sustainable Future

Shedding light on modern-day innovations, the key figureheads, and industry-leading expertise shaping our world’s energy transition is an important aspect of what Pangea Resourcing does.?

Highlighted below is a selection of innovative, creative, and life-changing sustainability inventions recently created.?

The Magnus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine in Batanes, Philippines

Typhoon Turbine – A Japanese start-up named, Challenergy has developed a type of wind turbine that can withstand typhoons and harness their immense power into energy. Japan experiences on average around 26 typhoons and tropical storms per year, which has previously limited their wind power potential, as traditional wind turbines cannot withstand high-intensity winds. Challenergy’s recent innovation of the Magnus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, first tested in 2016, can withstand winds of up to 340kph. The first test 1-kilowatt turbine was installed in Okinawa, Japan in 2016, however, another Magnus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine located in the Philippines has since begun operations and demonstrated success of this product. ?The invention is expected to transform the wind energy landscape in Japan and other areas prone to tropical storms. ?

Ooho Edible Water – Rodrigo García González, Pierre Paslier, and Guillaume Couche are the co-founders of Skipping Rocks Lab. They developed a fully biodegradable and edible water blob to combat the devasting impact of plastic water bottles. Costing less than 2 cents to produce, this invention holds the potential of becoming the future of portable water. Initially, this product targeted marathon event organisers due to its ease of use for athletes and excessive water bottle usage during sporting events (as further evidence of this, the 2018 London Marathon alone used 919,000 plastic bottles). Skipping Rocks Lab has the clear support of the public after crowdfunding $1 million over the span of just three days back in 2017. This popular start-up may attract users in other markets that similarly suffer from excessive plastic usage and require an increase in biodegradable liquid packaging in order to improve sustainability like soft drinks, spirits, and cosmetics companies.?

The edible and biodegradable six-pack.

The Edible Six-Pack – The pollution and damage from six-pack rings to wildlife and the surrounding environment has been a significant problem for a long period of time. ?Saltwater Brewery has decided to combat this by releasing edible six-pack rings – E6PR?. They are 100% edible and biodegradable being made of barley and wheat from the brewing process. According to Greenpeace, 80% of sea turtles and 70% of seabirds ingest plastic – proving the need to produce more eco-friendly materials that consider impacts on the environment. Saltwater Brewery has become one of the first start-ups to take major steps to combat the usage of traditional plastic six-pack rings. Since their inception, 200 brands from 24 countries have started using the product and making proactive efforts to protect the environment and wildlife.?

Whirlpool Turbine – Turbulent, a Belgium start-up, recently developed a hydropower whirlpool with the aim of providing constant renewable energy to remote communities around the world. Designed to be a simple and easy source of energy, the product has one moving part, which is powered by the vortex that the structure creates. They are designed to work harmoniously with nature and wildlife, cause little-to-no disturbance, and generate continuous and sustainable energy for surrounding communities. Since 2018, Turbulent has been used in many projects across the world including a 13kW project in Indonesia to a 100kW project currently in progress in Taiwan. ?
