Solve More Automation Applications
From detecting bottles on a high-speed shrink sleeve label applicator to verifying the presence and position of parts for manufacturing, photoelectric sensors play a critical role in many industrial processes and are essential to automation.
Recent innovations have made these devices more reliable, compact, powerful, and cost-effective, enabling wider use in more applications and industries.
Photoelectric sensors detect the presence or absence of an object or changes in surface conditions by emitting and receiving (or not receiving) a beam of light directed at a target, which generates an output signal.
The signal from a sensor with a discrete output is YES or NO. While the response is simple, the applications are nearly unlimited and the data generated can be used to gain greater insight into cycle time, throughput, and utilization.
Sensor output can also be more complex. The signal from a sensor with an analog output varies over range and is proportional to the strength of the light signal it receives.
Laser sensors emit a very narrow beam, offer extended range capabilities, and are often used to measure precise distances in analog applications.
Laser sensors with Dual Mode reliably detect some of the most challenging targets, such as clear, reflective, and low contrast targets. These sensors measure distance and light intensity, allowing you to inspect for multiple conditions with a single device, such as object presence, stacked objects, and correct orientation.
IO-Link enables even more advanced capabilities. This open communications protocol makes it easy to access device status, configuration, and health data that can be used for machine control, predictive maintenance, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), and much more.
The capabilities offered by laser sensors make them a good choice for many applications, including discrete and IO-Link applications.

AUTOMATION ESSENTIALS
Understanding Sensing Modes
Photoelectric sensors are one of the most used and useful sensor types available. They perform a wide variety of tasks, come with different sensing ranges, response times, and housings. Some require separate emitters and receivers and detect when a target breaks its beam, while others are self-contained and use the light reflected from the target for its detection. These detection methods are known as sensing modes and understanding how they work is essential to picking the right sensor for an application.

Unlocking Data from Legacy Sensors
The production manager at a bottling plant needed to identify and resolve issues on an underperforming production line. The system was older and had no way to monitor throughput. Updating the equipment to include monitoring capabilities was considered to be too time consuming and expensive.
The production manager was able to find and correct the source of reduced output by collecting actionable data from the existing sensors on their equipment using an easy-to-implement and cost-effective IIoT technology.
