Innovations in Disguise Through Pivoting!
"Pivoting isn’t Plan B. It’s the Process."??? ― Jeff Goins?
Did you know that YouTube started out as a dating site???
It’s true! In 2005, Chad Hurley and his partners, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, started their humble beginnings with a video-based dating site. It even had the genius tagline “Tune in, hook up.”??
The idea behind it sounded great – get people interested in the app and upload videos introducing themselves. Except, as they found, not even $20 Craigslist ads would encourage users to upload videos of themselves.??
At this point, no one used the site, at least in the way it was intended... so what did they do?? They deliberately pivoted!???

Maybe It’s Time to Consider Pivoting... But When??
As a deliberate innovator, you have finally iterated your way to the Plan Stage. This means you’ve had a long road on tools spent understanding your root challenges, gained insights on important aspects of the problem, expansively ideated until you had a prioritized idea, and finally learned and experimented to put your concept to the test.???
?Now, you lead a starter idea into fully fledged concept ready to plan and put into action...? but some things are not in your control. Maybe a competitor emerged with a similar product or your experimentation from the Learn Phase unearthed a critical weakness in your idea. The stars aren’t aligned, and you’re thinking about throwing this concept you worked so hard on in the trash.??
Or worse yet, you go forward with it without considering this crucial step: Pivoting.??
So, What is Pivot Planning??
Pivot Planning helps you to strengthen ideas and enable the team to pivot considering a critical weakness.??
The Pivot Planner is a tool that can, and should, be used iteratively throughout the product development.? Once the team has established a solid concept, the pivot planner can be used to focus on the weaknesses in the concept in order to improve it.????
