Innovation at Work, One Tap at a Time: The Hayat Mobile App

Innovation has the power to transform lives. The story of Lady Health Workers (LHW) in Pakistan is a perfect example. These incredible individuals dedicate their lives to providing care to children and women of reproductive age in underserved communities. However, their noble mission has been hindered by manual documentation processes and limited access to crucial data.

From physical registers to digital records

Traditionally, Lady Health Workers have relied on heavy physical registers to record their activities. The data collected ranges from vital reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) services to immunization and child growth data. Carrying these registers in rough terrains and extreme weather has proven to be challenging, further burdening these dedicated health workers. In addition to the registers, they also carry kits, weight machines, and other necessary items. This cumbersome documentation process not only consumes valuable time but also introduces the risk of human errors. This undermines the accuracy and reliability of the data collected. Moreover, the limited utilization of this data by decision-makers hampers effective policy formulation and resource allocation for the communities in need. That's where the Hayat Mobile App comes into play. It has revolutionized the way LHWs provide care and ensured better health outcomes for their communities.

What are the benefits of using the Hayat mobile app?

By digitizing the manual registers, this innovative app relieves Lady Health Workers from the burden of carrying heavy physical documents. Armed with just a smartphone, they can easily access and update their patients' records. No matter the challenging terrain or weather conditions they face.

But that's not all—the Hayat Mobile App goes beyond digitizing registers. It empowers LHWs to deliver care more effectively by providing a wealth of resources at their fingertips. The app offers awareness videos that educate the community on various health topics, further enhancing the impact of their work. LHWs can now easily access real-time data. This enables them to make informed decisions on the ground and respond promptly to emerging health needs.

Equally significant, the digitization of data through the Hayat Mobile App ensures that policy- and decision-makers have timely access to comprehensive and accurate information. Case in point; Since its launch in 2019, the app has registered over 441,000 beneficiaries and conducted 192,000 educational awareness sessions.?This has empowered them to develop evidence-based strategies, allocate resources efficiently, and take proactive measures to address the healthcare needs of underserved communities.

Impact of the Hayat Mobile App Innovation

The Aga Khan University's Hayat Mobile Application has received international acclaim at the Commonwealth Digital Health Awards (CWDHA) 2022. The app was honoured with the top prize in the maternal and neonatal health category. This highlights its outstanding novel contributions to improving healthcare outcomes for women and newborns. It is an inspiring testament to the power of innovation in improving healthcare delivery and strengthening community well-being.

By leveraging technology to overcome the challenges faced by LHWs, we are creating a positive ripple effect that reaches far beyond individual patients. We are enabling better care, informed decision-making, and ultimately, healthier communities.

Join us in celebrating this remarkable innovation and the dedicated Lady Health Workers who continue to make a difference every day. Together, let's harness the power of technology and innovation to build a brighter, healthier future for all.
