During my college days, I used to be fascinated by the Ganga Canal that used to flow very near to our campus at IIT Roorkee, particularly intriguing was the water-bridge over the Solani river. The 500+km Ganga canal was one of the Greatest human endeavor of those times and it was out of the challenge to meet the requirement of trained engineer and making the impossible possible that Asia’s first Civil Engineering College was born - today known as IIT Roorkee, a hub of Education, Research, Fun & Innovation. The Ganga Canal continues to be one of the primary channels for India in this region to leverage Water for irrigation & other activities, and one of the finest examples of Innovation of those times.
Talking about Water, the importance of which in our lives is undisputed. It is so essential that the United Nations recognizes access to Water & Sanitation as a Human Right. Water covers 70% of the planet, however, only 3% of it is fresh water i.e. water that can be used by mankind for drinking, irrigation, bathing etc. In fact 60% of it is frozen and unavailable altogether. This leads to a shortage of water for many people. More than 1 billion people worldwide don’t have proper access to a water supply. In addition, over 2 billion people experience water scarcity for one month every year. Lack of access to this vital natural resource can lead to many consequences, such as deaths related to drought.
?So what is the solution? Innovation with Technology!
Climate change is altering patterns of weather and water around the world and it is critical to address the issue of water scarcity using technology. The IBM Sustainability Accelerator is a pro bono social impact program that applies IBM technologies, such as hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence, and an ecosystem of experts to enhance and scale nonprofit and government organization interventions helping populations especially vulnerable to environmental threats including climate change, extreme weather, and pollution.
?IBM’s solution Liquid Prep is an end to end, open source platform that includes an IoT sensor and a mobile application running on the IBM Cloud that harness critical weather data from IBM’s Environmental Intelligence Suite. The innovation & details fascinated me and how the Water usage is optimized & made effective. Sharing this as part of this episode of Innovation Series as I am excited on how this Innovation can help towards a cause, lives of all of us are connected with. Have fun reading…
