Innovation Tech Series - Episode 24

Innovation Tech Series - Episode 24

A wise teacher once brought balloons to school, told her pupils to blow them up and write their name on one. After the children tossed their balloons into the hall, the teacher moved through the hall mixing them all up. The kids were given five minutes to find the balloon with their name on it, but though they searched frantically, no one found their own balloon.

Then the teacher told them to take the balloon closest to them and give it to the person whose name was on it. In less than two minutes, everyone was holding their own balloon.

I am sure all of you have read this story in a forward in your social media feeds linking it to Happiness. Ever pondered what is the difference between the two approaches? I think, that it is “THINK”. What is the fine line between Reacting and Responding – it is “THINK”. What is the difference between Hard Work & Smart Work – it is again “THINK”. What is the fine line between providing a solution & providing a creative solution that improvises & optimises – it is “THINK”

At IBM, Culture isn’t just one tool of management; it is the essence of management. It means that employees make the right decisions not because they are told what to do, but because they know what to do. Thomas J Watson Sr appropriated the company motto, “THINK,” very early with the clear message that “The first duty of every man or woman in any executive position is to follow the motto of this business: THINK.”

What do you ‘think’ about THINK ? Are the different ways to Think, different approaches to Think etc? Looking forward to hear your comments

PS: If you are interested to read more about the evolution & sustenance of THINK culture, read it at https://www.ibm.com/ibm/history/ibm100/us/en/icons/think_culture/

Think before you conclude or interpret as there can be aspects you missed or do not know

Very well demonstrated with the story. If we look back at the numerous problems we have solved in our lives and for our clients, what we realise is that the most complex ones were those where we reacted without practicing the THINK motto. On the other hand, once you THINK and respond, the complexity of the problem goes down tremendously. And that is why, in hind-sight everything looks so simple...because then we have had enough time to THINK ! Tying this to the Agile principles, this is what 'Retrospective principle' teaches us. Retrospect or THINK and you will find a better solution.

On the ‘reacting and responding bit’, active listening, empathy and growth mindset are corporate life skills that we integrate into everything we do. It is what makes us THINK. A mentor at IBM once told me, “don’t listen to respond, listen to understand first”. It always works.

Deepak Gupta Great Article, its life lesson not just corporate way to tackle situations.... Reaction is immediate & always with emotion and Respond is conscious way of interacting. Need to learn how to respond to all life challenges but how not to react. Way to go on THINK part.... THINK should be our first reaction ??
