Happy International Yoga Day !!!
Normally we do the Innovation Tech Series Episode weekly, but making an exception to the 13th episode on International Yoga Day, inspired by a post on Yoga & Being Agile. I relate to how Discipline & Mindset are a catalyst to both Innovation & Agile; and how Yoga teaches us to excel in both. So lets celebrate Yoga in this episode - an Innovation Humanity brought to the world of Health, Happiness & Joy !!!
Discipline to continuously improve, to look for better solutions & to be collaborative with experts of different fields requires patience and requires agility. This also directly relates to ‘regular’ Innovation sessions, Jams, Hackathons and to the Innovation groups that some of my colleagues have explained in the previous episodes of this series. Discipline is also making sure our energies are channelized. With recent sessions on Mindfulness, Heartfulness, Yoga & Meditation – I realized that we all manage Time in our own ways. But we need to manage our energies too – our body, our thoughts & emotions, our mind and our spirit. And once that is done and?the mind is relaxed, new ideas spring up automatically.
The second critical aspect is Mindset and differentiating between results & outcomes. Results could mean ideas getting dropped or rejected. But outcomes means continuous improvement & strengthening of ideas based on feedback; it also means a continuous journey of Innovation & new ideas. Most of the inventors face rejections at the Patent Council, but these ideas form the base of new ideas or provide for benefits to the existing solutions. The inherent culture at IBM encourages us to learn & march ahead. The skilled will see the co-relation with Retrospect, Inspect & Adapt, and Adjust.
There is a nice reference in the Agile post to the film “3 idiots” which I have been leveraging for years to my mentees i.e. “Strive for excellence, Success will follow.” This drives the protagonist of the movie to file numerous patents. So let me end with the same conclusion – Innovation & Agility – both are Journeys that you take, and not a destination. You can always do better than yesterday and continuously raise the bar !!!
