You know the myth about innovation. The story says that it comes from nowhere and that you might have a sudden idea. But this is not true, because an innovator's mind has been working on this for a long time before they had that "aha" moment.

How did Einstein get his ideas? One way is that he had flashes of insight while shaving in the morning. But he was really working on the problems that he had insights about. And these insights were not for new kitchen gadgets or movie plots.

Einstein's ideas came from past and present mental work. You may think that he had sudden ideas, but he worked for many years to find his ideas. Like a singer who has been working on singing for ten years and then becomes famous in one day.

Innovative individuals only have "sudden" new ideas because they have been continually working and thinking in certain ways for some time.

If you want to become a creative thinker, why not start developing the mental skills that go with it?

Mental Habits Lead to Innovation

Problems can be opportunities.?"Problem" may sound bad, but problems can lead to better things. For example, we have clocks on our wrists because we don't know what time it was. And people who have diseases get better because of the sewer systems that are clean.

Always search for opportunities with every problem. Even if it is a boring problem like not having enough space, you might find an opportunity to come up with something new.

You might just construct a plywood floor in the attic, but you may also invent a new style of outdoor storage item.

Innovation begins with understanding the key elements.?A door to an innovator isn't made of metal, wood, or glass. The key elements are entry and exclusion.

Begin by doing what I've shown you, and you'll soon be dreaming up new methods to use a door. You might create a door that opens when you speak (love it when your hands are full), as well as one that shuts and locks itself if anyone else comes too close.

Think of the key elements in things.

Attitude helps innovation.?In the creative problem-solving technique of concept-combination, you combine two ideas to see what new idea or product will happen. Be sure that there will be a useful new idea.

When you start with an assumption, your mind will imagine things. A shoe and a CD have nothing to do with each other, but just by thinking of one thing (a CD player with headphones that only plays the music correctly if a jogger maintains his ideal pace) it can make you think of another thing.

When you assume there is something there, you'll often find something.

Playfulness helps innovation.?A playful intellect is a creative intellect, and while high IQ doesn't equal creativity, mix it with playfulness, and you've got yourself an Einstein. Remember, he imagined riding on a beam of light to come up with his theory of relativity.

Why not begin playing with concepts and items in your mind and around you?

Innovation is not about being the first to come up with an idea. It's about creating solutions that are better and more meaningful than what came before.

Be playful, use your attitude to build on others' ideas for new creations, understand the key elements of a problem so you can solve it in a way that makes sense for everyone involved, think outside of the box when looking at problems as opportunities, and see how neuroscience principles like playfulness help drive creativity.
