Innovation @ Paints

Paint as everybody knows is a liquid when applied in thin layers to objects, converts to a solid film over various textures. They are available in many colors and in many different types like water based, oil based, synthetic, etc., and is available in liquid and dry forms. Surprisingly people used limestone, water colors and oil colors but the paints were never out of fashion.

Old paintings from cave age were not made using paints but substances like charcoal, manganese oxide. Later on we see that people have experimented and made paints from egg yolks, vegetables, leaves, flowers etc. A hardening substance like gum or oil mixed with pigments created from natural sources like various sand, clay, talc, mica, soil, vegetables, and form Synthetic pigments from calcined clays, blanc fixe, precipitated calcium carbonate, synthetic pyrogenic silicas and lead.

With improvement in paints types the focus shifted to durable paints, its fluidity, appearance, anti freezing, pigment stability, gloss and de-gloss agents, fighting bacteria, fire proof paints, color – changing paints, Electrochromic paints, etc.

Basic Paint emulsion or oil paint were the primary sales leaders with the changing demands the ancillary products came into lime light for better spreading out of paints and making them long lasting, faster drying paints.

Paint industry has always been innovating and surprising its users with the characteristics of learning industry which attempted experimentation to keep up to the demands. Having ideas is a positive point but they are futile is remain unused or your competitor uses it.

As per Indian Paint Association, the Indian paint market is currently at Rs. 40,300 crores further bifurcated Rs. 30,385 crores in decorative paints and industrial paints Rs. 9,915 crores in 2016 with per capita consumption of Paint around 3.34kg.  Revenue slip in decorative paints 75% and industrial paints contributed 25%. Paint industry has innovatively reached out people of different class, ages, income groups by finding a reason to stay in touch which is most important in the current world.

  •      Product variants: Different spray cans, paints, markers etc.
  •      Primer is a preparatory coating put on materials before applying the paint itself. The primed surface ensures better adhesion of the paint, thereby increasing the durability of the paint.
  •      Emulsion paints are water-based paints in which the paint material , it has advantages in fast drying, low toxicity, low cost, easier application, and easier cleaning of equipment, among other factors.
  •      Flat Finish paint is generally used on ceilings or walls that are in bad shape, useful for hiding imperfections in walls and it is economical but not easily washable and is subject to staining.
  •      Matte Finish is similar to flat finish, but offers superior washability and coverage.
  •      Eggshell Finish paint has some gloss, has great washability, water repellent, but is not very effective at hiding imperfections on walls and similar surfaces.
  •      Pearl (Satin) Finish is very durable in terms of washability and resistance to moisture, even in comparison to eggshell finish.
  •      Semi-Gloss Finish typically is used to show off woodwork and it provides good protection from moisture and stains on walls, popularly used in schools and factories where washability and durability is required.
  •      Varnish and shellac are paints without pigment; they provide a protective coating without substantially changing the color of the surface, though they can highlight the color of the material.
  •      Lacquer is a solvent-based paint or varnish that dries fast and that produces hard and durable finish.
  •      Enamel paint is used to get hard and glossy, finish. Some enamel paints contain fine glass powder or metal flake instead of the color pigments in standard oil-based paints.
  •      A roof coating is a fluid that sets as an elastic membrane that can stretch without harm. It provides UV protection to polyurethane foam and is widely used in roof restoration.

  •      Anti-slip paint contains chemicals or grit to increase the friction of a surface so as to decrease the risk of slipping, particularly in wet conditions.
  •      Road marking paint is specially used to marking and painting road traffic signs and lines, to form a durable coating film on the road surface.
  •      Luminous paint or luminescent paint gives off visible light through fluorescence, phosphorescence, or radioluminescence.

Future of Paint industry is bright due to increasing demands in various sectors.
