Innovation Nation: Women for Wildlife Leading the Charge Against Illegal Wildlife Trafficking

What a privilege to kick off my morning at the Taronga Zoo Women for Wildlife celebration with Ali Rossiter marking their milestone: raising $100,000 for Taronga’s forensic project, WildEnforce.

Hosted by the incredible Michelle Shaw, Taronga’s Wildlife Nutritionist, the event featured a powerful panel discussion with scientists Dr. Justine O’Brien, Dr. Phoebe Meagher, and special guest Dr. Vanessa Pirotta. We dived into the groundbreaking work of WildEnforce, learning how technology and collaboration are key to tackling the pressing issue of illegal wildlife trafficking.

Who knew that lizards could be smuggled in a bag? The stories shared were eye-opening, illustrating how these dedicated scientists are combating wildlife crime. Their collaboration stemmed from diverse disciplines coming together, sparking innovative solutions to a wicked problem. So far, they've rescued over 100 animals—a testament to the power of teamwork!

The discussion also highlighted the innovative tech tools aiding wildlife conservation, from AI to drones. Did you know Australia is home to some of the most trafficked animals globally, including black cockatoos? Not to mention the impact of illegal wildlife trade into the country impacting Australia's billion-dollar agriculture industry.

Taronga Zoo is leading the charge, with Australia as an innovation nation, boasting the world’s first algorithm for tracking trafficking patterns. Their cutting-edge research in conservation sets a global standard.

The panel also offered inspiring advice to young women aspiring to be scientists: there are multiple pathways to success, and persistence is key. When faced with doubt and setbacks, respond with “Here I go!”—a mantra for curiosity and resilience.

It was heartwarming to see women of all ages in attendance, from students to seasoned professionals and retirees highlighting the importance of intergenerational support. Social media emerged as a powerful tool for spreading awareness about this vital work.

Feeling inspired by these fierce female scientists fighting against illegal wildlife trade! ???

Want to get involved? You can join the Women for Wildlife community, make a donation or help via expertise and connection. The team is actively seeking an airline partner to amplify their message through in-flight videos. They will be hosting some events at Nature Positive Summit coming up next month—stay tuned!

I encourage you to learn more about this amazing work and how you can support the fight against wildlife trafficking. Every action counts!
