Innovation in Agriculture and Fishing by Leveraging Hokkaido’s Strength
Hokkaido, Japan's agricultural and fishing hub, stands on the brink of a transformative era, powered by technology. As the region grapples with declining workforce numbers, the advent of innovative solutions are needed to keep the industries afloat. These breakthroughs, are rooted in principles close to Hokkaido such as sustainability and community, aimed to reshape not only Hokkaido, but Japan and even global agriculture and fishing industry.
The article will draw from information discussed at the CIC Tokyo event, with speakers Masakazu Yajima (AmaterZ), Chiba Keisuke (Yobimori), and Sasaki Tepei (Revic).
Understanding Hokkaido's Farming and Fishing Landscape
Hokkaido holds Japan's largest agriculture and fishing market, with agriculture output sitting at 12,593 billion yen and fishing at 2,750 billion yen. However, the agricultural and fishing sectors are currently facing a decline in the workforce caused by the aging population, and the landmass managed by each entity is expanding year over year; the industry faces a vital problem. To tackle this issue, the emerging field of agriculture-technology presents promising solutions. These traditional industries hope to increase efficiency by integrating technology, helping hold rural communities together.
The acceptance of these technologies is promising among new-age farmers in Hokkaido, who have already shown signs of high digital literacy. Many young farmers are integrating data into their daily workflow much faster than the rest of Japan. The mindset can be linked to the need for implementing technological tools, as Hokkaido manages the most land in the country.

Why Start-Ups Should Consider Hokkaido
Hokkaido has become a prime location for agri-tech startups, especially with its agriculture and fishing industries leading Japan. Global challenges manifest first in Japan, such as workforce shortages and rising temperatures. Thus, innovating in Japan becomes a prime opportunity for global-minded startups to gather customer feedback, especially in tightly-knit regions like Hokkaido. This feedback aids in shaping scalable and sustainable businesses for the future, as success in Hokkaido can lay a robust foundation for solidifying business ideas.
Some ventures may be concerned by Hokkaido's expansive size, making it challenging to reach rural farmers and fishermen. However, associations with deep-rooted relationships can support startups, helping spread the word about new tech. Leveraging these existing networks proves invaluable for small ventures, as building new connections can be time-consuming and labour-intensive, especially in Japan.
Summary: Hokkaido a Region With Modern Challenges and Innovative Solutions
Hokkaido, with its deep-rooted agricultural and maritime industries, seamlessly merges the potential of tradition and contemporary innovation. As global issues emerge first in Japan, Hokkaido offers an early window into potential solutions. As the Hokkaido community embraces the innovation, start-ups find a fertile testing ground for their global aspirations. The blend of rich historical practices, technological ingenuity, and community support ensures Hokkaido remains at the forefront of the next phase in agriculture and maritime evolution.

1 年It is so right. Labour shortage problem and high labour cost are? most of the developed country is facing. Most of the young genernation are not interest to invloved into high physically hard work. In Aus and NZ, we are replying on oversea backpacker. However, it is a short term solution, not a long term.(i think) One of the idea i can think of is agricultural systematization.? Building the standardization? system, let the system grow the crop. We take care the system , not the crop. Simplify the work, Reduced workload. Effectively growing crop with less labour. Just like the different between fastfood?franchised restaurant and general restaurant. Hope this logical thinking will work.
