The Magic of Subtraction

Innovate by Reducing

In the world of Design Thinking, ideation is a crucial phase where creativity and innovation take center stage. While brainstorming often conjures images of adding new features and elements, there is immense value in considering subtraction as a path to innovation.

Ideation (Brainstorming): During the ideation phase, we focused on how subtraction could be applied to the existing processes. Instead of merely adding new steps or components, we explored ways to simplify or streamline the processes by removing unnecessary steps, components, or features. This approach led to more innovative solutions that solved the problems more efficiently.

SCAMPER: A Tool for Subtraction

The SCAMPER tool is an excellent example of how subtraction can be integrated into creative problem-solving and innovation. SCAMPER stands for Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, and Reverse. It is a brainstorming technique that prompts individuals and teams to generate creative ideas by asking a series of questions related to each category. The "E" in SCAMPER stands for "Eliminate," directly aligning with the concept of subtraction.

Using the "Eliminate" Aspect of SCAMPER:

  • Identify Unnecessary Elements: We started by examining the existing processes to identify elements that may be unnecessary, redundant, or no longer serving their intended purpose.
  • Ask Questions: We used questions like "What can we eliminate from this process?" or "Is there anything we can do without?" to stimulate creative thinking about removal.
  • Streamline and Simplify: We considered how eliminating certain elements could streamline and simplify the overall process. Removing unnecessary complexity often improves efficiency and user experience.
  • Evaluate Impact: We assessed the impact of each elimination. Would it lead to a more efficient process, a cost reduction, or a better user experience?
  • Iterate: We continued to iterate and experiment with different elements to eliminate. We weren't afraid to try various combinations of eliminations to see which ones produced the best results.

Applying Subtraction Beyond Processes:

While our focus was on process improvement, the concept of subtraction can also be applied to product and service improvement. By removing unnecessary features or components from products and services, we can simplify and enhance the user experience, improve efficiency, and reduce costs.

Discover the Magic of Subtraction:

Embrace the potential of subtraction in your next brainstorming session and witness how it can transform your approach to problem-solving and process improvement.
