The Inner One

"How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." - Annie Dillard

Welcome to another edition of The Leadershifts Chronicle, a newsletter where I share ideas and resources for leaders who build better businesses and explore new ways of running an organisation.

"How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives."

I found a quote in the book "Wendbaar als het woelig wordt" about resilience by?Liselotte Baeijaert,?Chris Aertsen,?Lily Deforce,?and?Anton Stellamans.

It hit me hard and made me think and reflect.

  • How do I spend my days?
  • What's my energy?
  • Which impact do I want to have?

But also, "How can I bring more joy to my life?"

Some essential questions to reflect on this summer. Isn't the summer an excellent time to reflect on them and plan the next steps?

It will be for me anyway...

Welcome to this week's Leadershifts Chronicle...

Enjoy...

?? Critical Thinking is a key element of good leadership. Eli Amdur Career Coach, Journalist, Writer, Keynote Speaker published 10 Elements Of Critical Thinking – And How To Develop Them in Forbes

?? Today, Floor Daver shared a great Team Coach Tip at the end of your meetings. But it's also an excellent tool for a leader to ask your employees when you talk to them. It's a great way to connect and discover what's happening in your organisation's undercurrent.

Steps:

?? Ask each team member what they are satisfied with.

?? Next, ask what they are dissatisfied with.

?? If dissatisfied with something, let them identify what they will do to alleviate it and avoid it next time.

?? Why do so many incompetent men become leaders? And what can we do about it? Have you ever worked with people who are not as good as they think??If yes, then you know a bad leader can significantly impact the organisation and the people.

According to Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic Premuzic, the main question we should ask is not why there aren’t any more women leaders but why so many incompetent men become leaders.?

  • My research suggests three main reasons, the first of which is our inability to distinguish between confidence and competence.

The second reason is our love of charismatic individuals

  • The third and final reason for the rise of incompetent men is our inability to resist the allure of narcissistic individuals — people with grandiose visions that tap into our narcissism.

He sees two solutions:

  • The first solution is to follow the signs and look for the qualities that make people better leaders.
  • The second solution is to distrust our instincts.

Things to watch

A few years ago, I discovered the Inner Development Goals , which aim to foster personal development that aligns with broader societal goals. They address the need for a deeper connection to oneself and the community to tackle global challenges effectively.

It's an excellent framework for (emerging) leaders to become better leaders.

They consist of five key dimensions, each with specific qualities and skills:

  1. Being: This dimension focuses on the relationship with oneself, encompassing aspects such as self-awareness, authenticity, integrity, openness, and a willingness to learn.
  2. Thinking: It involves cognitive skills for critical thinking, understanding complexity, long-term visioning, and the ability to navigate contrasting perspectives.
  3. Relating: This area emphasizes connection with others and the world, highlighting qualities like empathy, compassion, humility, and appreciation.
  4. Collaborating: This dimension covers social skills necessary for effective teamwork, including communication, co-creation, and inclusivity.
  5. Acting: It focuses on the ability to take action and drive change, requiring courage, creativity, optimism, and perseverance.

From 'Being' to 'Acting,' the IDGs serve not just as a framework but as a journey of transformation.

Images say so much more than words, and I was really touched when I saw this video of an IDG Retreat, led by?Siri Wikander?and?Johan Norrfj?rd,?in the woods of Sweden. It's about reflecting, slowing down, looking at the details, but also the broader view, getting in contact with what's vital for ourselves and how we can make a difference holistically.

This video by Berghs School of Communication gives me so much inspiration, hope, and power in my leadershift journey.

So that's it for this week.

Like always, feedback is very welcome and appreciated. It helps me grow on my path to becoming a better leader.

Have a great weekend and till next week...

Wouter
