The Inner Journey Of Life Is Far More Important Than The Outer Journey (Plus An Insight Added On March 17, 2024)

I believe the inner journey of life is far more important than the outer journey. Sadly however, in today's world, the outer journey seems to dominate the inner journey for most people.

The outer journey is all about educational, social, and business accomplishments, the outward appearances of success. It is all about your reputation and how you are perceived in the public world. For the outer journey, we tend to wear masks, which are opaque; some masks are much more opaque than others. This should be a red flag of warning for all of us.

The inner journey of life represents whom you are as a human being. It is your true essence. For example, how compassionate and kind are you? How authentic? Do you treat all people with respect and especially those who can do nothing for you? Are humility and generosity key values of your life?

This journey should be the life purpose of all human beings, that is, becoming a human being who is both an authentic person and a person of integrity and honor.

All of us have to make both journeys, the inner and the outer. Don't let the outer journey crush the inner.

A Simple Call For Action

Sit with two or three trusted friends and spend some time discussing how each of you stand respectively with your life journey. Perhaps a mid-course correction is necessary. It is never too late to make such a course change.

An Afterthought Insight Added On March 17, 2024

It occured to me after I wrote the original article, that if we get the Inner Journey work done as early as possible and continue with it throughout our life, that it will have a synergistic effect on the Outer Journey. A simple understanding, but with profound effect.

Hi, Andy, Thanks for this thoughtful message. Ideally, the inner and outer journeys you mention will be linked. Have had that good fortune myself--not always, of course, but enough to provide some satisfaction/wonder/beauty. Please keep up your own writing!
