As defined by international standard IEC 60529, it classifies the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water in electrical enclosures.
Ingress protection, or IP rating system is important because it helps manufacturers and users to ensure that electronic devices are protected from the harmful effects of dust, dirt, and moisture.
It is particularly important in applications where electronic devices are used in harsh environments, such as outdoor or industrial settings.
Ingress protection rating is expressed in two digits, with the first digit indicating the level of protection against solids and the second digit indicating the level of protection against liquids.
The range of numbers is from 0 to 6 for solids and 0 to 9 for liquids, with higher numbers indicating higher levels of protection as mentioned below table:
For example, an enclosure rated as IP67 provides a high level of protection against both solids and liquids.

Have a look into a meter specification to understand this:
Ingress Protection (IP) Rating = IP 51
The first digit 5 indicates that the Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment, while the second digit 1 indicates that the dripping water (vertically falling drops) shall have no harmful effect.
In addition to the numerical ratings, there are also specific letters used to indicate additional features of the enclosure, such as protection against oil or protection against impact.
In conclusion, the IP rating system is an important tool for ensuring that electronic devices are protected from the harmful effects of solids and liquids. The system provides a simple and easy-to-understand way of indicating the level of protection provided by an enclosure, which helps manufacturers and users to select the appropriate level of protection for a given application.
Thanks for reading. Cheers!!
