Ingenuity at Erwin Part 3

Ingenuity at Erwin Part 3

So I know that I was going to make this a monthly ordeal but I had some free time at lunch.

Prior to our most recent ANI audit I reached out to H3D about their Polaris-H Imaging spectrometer.  As I stated in previous posts we have an issue with alarming our neighbors detection systems and were interested to know where the dose was coming from in the facility.

Andy Boucher ([email protected])showed up to demonstrate the product and ended up taking about 10 shots for us and then writing up a preliminary report, all free of charge.  Which was pretty awesome since I was able to present it to ANI as one of the efforts we are making to identify and reduce potential dose to the public and personnel.

You can see from the pictures attached below that it can be used for many other purposes.  One potential dose savings for us is to use it to scan high dose liners for the highest dose point, which keeps our workers away from the liner until the highest point is identified.  Another is pointing it in areas that we have no accessed in months because it paints a very clear picture of contamination  location and this saves quite a bit of dose doing a blind entry survey.  And finally, as shown below, we used it to confirm that all of our tools were "clean".

One huge bonus for us since our liners are always a mixed bag, is the nuclide identification system that's built into the unit.  Unlike Genie-2000 the unit has a pre-built list of nuclides that you can select using a I pad touch screen, making it incredibly user friendly for technicians in the field, but also it has a in-depth program for post processing if you need the report to be more technical.

Its a pretty fantastic device, a bit of a price tag but it produces its own reports, and is a great tool for dose reduction, audits, community reports, and general hazard awareness. The utilization of the Ipad with the unit as well as the photos embedded in the reports are perfect for sites that deal with personnel who enjoy seeing correlating pictures. for more information on the product you can find it here https://www.h3dgamma.com/nuclearProducts.php

Good stuff Justin! We need more young minds coming up with ideas like this to ensure the safety of the workers and the public! Well done!
