Virgin Media O2's record savings by enhancing data center efficiency
As part of our coverage of Pure Accelerate a few months back, we heard from Virgin Media O2, which said it has saved “millions of pounds” by improving data center efficiency. How did it do this? By introducing flash storage drives.
Ajit Sharma, business optimization manager at the telecoms giant, told attendees at the event that the integration of the devices in data center operations followed a deal with Pure Storage to adopt its FlashArray//X drives.
This move reportedly delivered significant operational and financial benefits, including a 98% reduction in its data center footprint and a 96% reduction in power consumption.
Sharma also hailed improvements made to the company’s data architecture, which has allowed the firm to reduce the effect of rising energy costs.
Liverpool FC's blockbuster signing that's helped revolutionize its media operations
Liverpool Football Club is one of the world’s most renowned soccer institutions, with a massive global fan base and a rich history of success. As a prominent brand in the sports industry, the club has recognized the importance of digital transformation and embarked on a journey to improve its operations and fan experiences.
The club generates and distributes a substantial amount of digital content across various platforms. This includes live match broadcasts, highlights, interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and promotional materials. The sheer magnitude of Liverpool FC’s digital media workflows posed significant challenges in terms of content creation, distribution, storage, and accessibility.

Rolls-Royce and its empowerment of citizen developers through Power BI
Aerospace giant Rolls-Royce , traditionally a fount of innovative technology, recently gave us an inside look at its latest gambit – embracing citizen developers.
The goal is to empower its internal developer community to drive change across its manufacturing and corporate environments. Through Microsoft’s low-code Power Apps platform, the company has allowed employees to overcome internal work hurdles via self-made software, as well as to build a lively developer community.
“This all started when as a team we asked ourselves the question: ‘What if 1,000 people could do something that would save £10,000 each?’,” says Stuart Hughes , CIO and chief digital officer (CDO) at Rolls-Royce.
“That's actually really significant digital transformation, right? It fundamentally changes our finances, but also hopefully would give us a better product for our customers that meets that kind of availability reliability and efficiency.”
