Infrastructure Cost Saving Initiatives

Infrastructure Cost Saving Initiatives

Managing infrastructure costs is vital for any organization to maintain efficient operations. Here's how we've optimized our AWS infrastructure, saving approximately 25% of our expenses:

1. Automated Infrastructure Management: Our QA and UAT infrastructure now automatically halts at 11 PM and resumes at 9 AM IST, ensuring resources are utilized only when necessary.

2. Instance Type Optimization: By analyzing instance types and adjusting EC2 instances based on usage patterns, we've optimized performance and reduced costs.

3. Aurora DB Optimization: We resized our Aurora DB (MySQL) to better match our requirements, resulting in cost savings without sacrificing performance.

4. Storage Optimization: Adjusting attached storage of EC2 instances has allowed us to match storage needs more accurately, reducing unnecessary costs.

5. Security Group Cleanup: Removing unused Security Groups and Test VPNs has streamlined our security setup and reduced unnecessary expenses.

6. Load Balancer Optimization: Cleaning up Application Load Balancers has eliminated redundant resources and optimized costs.

7. Snapshot Management: Regularly cleaning up snapshots has reduced storage costs by removing unnecessary data.

8. Service Termination: Terminating unused services, such as Test EKS Services, has freed up resources and reduced expenses.

9. Scaling Policies Update: Updating scaling policies for ECS has aligned resource allocation with workload requirements, optimizing costs.

10. Elasticache Resizing: Resizing Elasticache instances has improved performance while reducing costs.

11. Log Group Cleanup: Removing unused CloudWatch log groups has decluttered our environment and saved on logging costs.

12. Spot Instances Utilization: Leveraging Spot Instances for Testing Environment has provided cost savings without compromising performance.

13. Linux Image Optimization: Transitioning to default AWS Linux images has reduced licensing costs and streamlined operations.

14. VPC Cleanup: Removing unnecessary VPCs has simplified our network architecture and reduced management overhead.

These initiatives have allowed us to optimize costs while maintaining optimal performance.

Kudos to our DevOps team for their efforts!

very interesting and useful insights. Woukd love to see more details in your future posts. AWS costs is always a significant challenge especially for startups. Hence, these insights hel. Also, you might co sider optimization of code of how we can execute in optimal time, threadsand memory which has a direct impact on maintainability and infra cost. Thanks for this wonderful article.
