Infrastructural Development: Empowering Rural India for a Bright Future
Sarabjit Singh Puri (Rural Market Strategist)
Chairman @ FATEH RURAL LIMITED | Agribusiness | Rural Markets
Infrastructural development in rural India has significantly improved living standards and created new opportunities for economic growth. By 2019, 100% of Indian villages were electrified, improving access to power for households and key public institutions. Although 3 crore households remain without electricity, the government’s continued efforts promise to bring them into the grid soon. Additionally, rural roads, forming 73% of India's 1.7 million km road network, have seen significant improvements through the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), providing better connectivity between villages and cities. Despite 30% of villages still being underserved, the government's Phase-3 rural road programme aims to revamp 1.25 lakh km of roads by 2024-25. Alongside this, India’s 7,500 regulated agricultural markets, or mandis, serve as economic hubs for farmers, offering a vast potential market for agricultural goods. These advancements in infrastructure are making rural markets increasingly attractive for investment and marketing, contributing to India's overall growth.
