Infrared Thermography for Condition Monitoring

Eurofins TestOil is excited to announced that they will be introducing Thermography for condition monitoring this year. This will be an excellent complement to the company’s already comprehensive oil analysis services and additional condition monitoring services that will also be available soon.

Eurofins TestOil Reliability Field Analyst and Certified Thermographer Camron Cunningham observes, “Thermography pairs with oil analysis very well. In human terms, oil analysis is comparable to the bloodwork of the asset. Thermography is comparable to checking the temperature. “

He adds, “An asset can look fine, but the thermal camera can see the fever that may be affecting the oil. This can lead to a point where the oil burns up enough to cause the asset internal destruction or the asset's power source to fail from a nearby location (circuit breaker, fuses, power outlets, etc.). These reliability resources complement each other very well by creating a system of checks and balances for an asset or location. This leads to greater peace of mind for our customers and more data points that lead to better reliability decisions.”

??????????????? The main objective of infrared thermography is to confirm the machinery is running at a healthy temperature and to detect abnormal heat patterns that would indicate inefficiency and/or defects.

??????????????? Depending on the needs of the customer, services include Qualitative Thermography, Quantitative Thermography or both. Camron explains the difference:

• Qualitative Thermography involves getting a quality image that shows the thermal anomalies in great detail. This method also yields an “apparent temperature”. The apparent temperature is not a true temperature because the proper information would need to be in the settings of the thermal camera to get a true temperature for that asset or location. However, with this method, the customer is not looking for true temperature.
• Quantitative Thermography also involves getting a quality thermal image and, in this case, a true temperature. The analyst needs to have an understanding of the emissivity and reflective temperature of the asset or location they are testing in order to make adjustments to the camera. Then the analyst will ensure the thermal image is captured at the proper angle to order to get the true temperature of the asset or location.

The resulting report, depending on customer requirements, will include the asset information, the thermal image(s), the thermal image(s) parameter information, the findings of the thermal image(s) that were discovered, and potentially the next steps and recommendations.
