Information Repetition in games
I find useless repetition in games all the time, but what do I count as such?
Useless repetition for me is telling the player the same thing in many different places with no extra information. For example, no one would ever put the coin balance on the top and the bottom of the screen because the information can be shown only once and achieve the same results.
Why is useless repetition bad?
Not only does it waste place on the screen and make it cluttered, it also harms the ability to control the user's focus and can confuse the players.
And for our example:
Here are 2 screen shots from the game,
Let's see what the buttons do and what the is '5' indication about,
Button 2 shows us that we have 5 buildings to build in our "Building the city" area.
Button 1 opens the menu tab and you can see that the indication is for button 3 the "Build" button.

That is how we have 2 different buttons with notifications on our main screen that both say the same thing - "You have 5 buildings to build".
When I saw this I was so confused about the difference between the 2 (and still am). Until now, so many times I opened the menu thinking I got a notification and realized it's just about the building.
*A note - the only other screen besides the main screen is the build screen so there is no other place this could be useful...
Discussion questions:
Why do you think they did it?
Would you remove only the indication on the Menu button or the Build button there too?
Do you know any other games that have useless repetition of information in a way like this or another?
