Trimac 2024 Innovation Summit success in Silicon Valley
Over the next decade, we will experience more upheaval and create more wealth than we have in the past hundred years. It leaves us wondering what happens as AI, robotics, virtual reality, digital biology and sensors intertwine with 3D printing, blockchain, global gigabit networks and platform-based economies. To survive undeniable changes in this space, the Innovation Summit was created in 2018 as a commitment to our core clients that Trimac will stay engaged with our customers’ journeys and gain internal skills, general knowledge and insight into our industry’s ecosystem.??
Trimac’s CRO Nathan Kurland hosted the event along with COO Ryan Collinge and Director Sales Mark Kelndorfer.??
This year’s guests included Petroleum UFA Sr Manager Jean-Michel Pare, Chemtrade VP of Supply Chain Karen Bryant, Suncor Energy National Truck Manager Andy Smith, Superior Gas Liquids VP of North America Supply, Logistics Mehri Salimova and CHS SVP Transportation Jacqueline Bailey.??
“Innovation summit 2024 was a hit with our valued customers.? Silicon Valley, Calif., which is arguably the hub of global innovation, provides a unique setting for us to listen, learn and discuss the future of our industry,” said CRO Nathan Kurland. “By hosting and attending side-by-side with our customers, we can better understand our customers’ experiences and expectations while thinking about the future. The value of this experience transcends beyond the opportunity to connect where we get exposure to emerging technology that in some form will influence the future of our industry.”??
The event began at Plug and Play offices with an introduction from Plug and Play CEO Saeed Amidi, followed by a presentation from keynote speaker, Mohan Akella, Walmart SVP Network Strategy on enhancing the customer experience and distribution optimization through robotics, automation and digitization.???
The event provided a forum for new supply chain and logistics-focused start-ups to pitch their technologies to a roster of Trimac’s top customers in a “Shark Tank” format, giving us and our partners early access to new and innovative tech that can improve our businesses.?
“We experienced ideas ranging from software that integrates Artificial Intelligence in order to enhance decision making, new emerging autonomous truck platforms, safety software driven by AI that taps into already existing security cameras to reduce risk to smart tire technology that can auto detect low tire pressure, tread depth and loose lug nuts,” stated Nathan. “The feedback we received was overwhelming positive from our customers on the unique experience and set the stage for the ability to have future conversations about how we can innovate in partnership with one another.”??
This year, startup pitch presentations were made by:??
Auba.ai , an AI-based assistant designed to prevent supply chain disruption and identify opportunities to realize cost savings across core industries.??
Facilis AI , who enables enterprises to leverage manufacturing data, machine learning, and AI to foster a data-driven culture.???
BANF , who developed sensor technology that mounts on tires and in the wheel well to monitor and detect tire issues ranging from tread depth, inflation, loose lug nuts, ultimately reducing safety incidents and tire-related costs.??
Wand , a data-AI platform that enables everyone, regardless of their technical skills, to be able to solve complex business problems and create impact quickly and intuitively.??
Protex AI , who are using existing security cameras and Protex systems to detect potentially unsafe activities, near-miss and incidents, such as vehicles not stopping at dangerous intersections.??
Later that day, the team visited Kodiak Robotics autonomous vehicles office. They have developed autonomous technology for self-driving trucks.????
To cap the summit, participants took part in an Innovation Workshop hosted by Paccar Innovation Center , focusing on strategic innovation issues anchored in day-to-day business challenges.??
Project drives efficiency with dispatch cement operations in Ontario?
Trimac is committed to finding innovative ways to enhance efficiency and streamline operations, and this project is a prime example of this dedication. Spearheaded by a collaborative effort across operations, business systems and project management office (PMO) teams, this initiative aims to enhance dispatch operations, particularly during cement season.??
The project stemmed from a simple question: what do our frontline teams need to succeed? This inquiry led to the identification of a significant pain point, which was the manual and repetitive task of building orders for dispatchers during cement season. With this insight, the project set out to find a solution that would alleviate this burden by automatically adding orders in TMW, empowering our teams to work more efficiently.?
Enter Automation Developer Prashant Mittal, who leveraged game-changing technology through cloud services. Prashant devised a solution that automates the extraction and processing of PDF orders from emails. This innovative approach promises to streamline workflows and free up valuable time for our dispatchers.??
Team Lead Application Development Jeff Schuler and Programmer Analyst Deborah Odoh also played a crucial role in bridging the gap between platforms, ensuring seamless integration and functionality for dry bulk dispatchers in Mississauga, Ont.????
Dispatch Manager Amandeep Waraich and her team were instrumental in driving this initiative forward. Planner Suraj Chandrashekariah and Dispatchers Srishti Mutreja and Bharat Tiwari demonstrated flexibility and dedication every step of the way.??
“With this tool doing the work of data entry, dispatch can focus on other important tasks like planning deliveries and coordinating with drivers,” said Amandeep. “Dispatch is getting more done in less time.”?
The success of the project was made possible by the collaborative efforts of our talented teams. From the dedication of Business Analyst Jazmyn Rusnack on the PMO team, Prashant’s self-taught innovative solutions, and Area Manager Al Campbell’s support, to the dispatch team’s willingness to collaborate—together, we brought this project across the finish line. The project is on track to revolutionizing dispatch operations and saving Dundas’ cement dispatchers upwards of 40 hours per week.???
“It has already reduced a lot of manual work for us and once it is live for the other customers too, it will be so much easier for us,” shared Srishti.???
With summer being the busiest time of the year for our cement division, the launch could not have been more perfectly timed. As the project progresses smoothly, it’s expected to expand its application to other cement customers soon.??
“It is working wonders for us. Once it is fully developed, it will help to eliminate errors as well,” said Suraj. “We are now able to concentrate better on trip standards and spend more time on resolving customer and driver issues.”??
The project embodies Trimac’s commitment to collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement. It serves as a testament to the incredible results that can be achieved when we work together towards a common goal. Hats off to the dedicated group that prioritized and supported this initiative.??

NTS Guelph spotlight: Restoring fire trucks and beyond?
The National Tank Services (NTS) Guelph, Ont. branch has been putting their exceptional skills to the test with their most recent project, restoring an old fire truck. Brought to the shop by a longtime customer who continuously entrusts them with these unique projects, this collector’s piece was completed in May 2024.??
This isn’t the first time the talented team has taken on a project of this calibre. So far this year, they have successfully repaired three fire trucks, bringing them back to their former glory. Over the years, the shop team has rebuilt more than 30 trucks, with each project taking around 80 to 120 hours to complete depending on the complexity.??
These projects demand extensive bodywork, and in some cases, even fabricating parts from scratch to meet the unique needs of each vehicle.???
But the expertise in Guelph doesn’t stop at fire trucks. The 14-person team has also tackled an array of other specialized vehicles, including their most recent project, an explosion unit designed for open-pit mining. Although each project presents its own set of challenges, the team consistently rises to the occasion and demonstrates versatility and a high level of craftsmanship.???
?A key figure in these efforts is Service Manager Blair Bairos, who joined Trimac when Fortress Tank Services was acquired in 2014. With decades of experience in building tankers, Blair brings a wealth of knowledge and a meticulous approach to every project—and ensures his team has the same opportunity.????
?The work being performed at the Guelph NTS branch highlights the incredible skills and dedication of our team, who continually strive to exceed expectations and deliver exceptional results.??
