Infographic: Understanding Instructor-Led Training in the 21st century

If you had to guess the percentage of training currently being delivered face-to-face in the US, what would you say?

It turns out that Instructor-Led Training represents no less than 70% of training hours. So why does (almost) no one talk about it?

According to Brandon Hall Group, Instructor-Led Training will remain the most widely used learning delivery for the forseeable future; the role of the classroom will evolve with the introduction of technology, and Instructor-Led Management will become more complex.

So is your organization ready for this transition? How well do you understand Instructor-Led Training opportunities and challenges, and are you in the best position to improve Instructor-Led Training Management?

You can get the full infographic here, but here are some of the key findings:

  • Use of ILT: 76% of high-performing organizations use the classroom to a high extent, which is higher than the average for all types of companies. Clearly, investing in Instructor-Led Training is a strategy that pays: the best companies, such as GE, Unilever and Walmart, are increasingly creating Corporate Universities which include a significant part of ILT.
  • Effectiveness of ILT: 56% of Instructor-Led Training is considered highly effective. The numbers are slightly lower for coaching and on-the-job training, but fall to a mere 21% for e-learning.
  • Priorities in ILT management: Managing resources is crucial for 74% of learning managers: an optimal use of training resources can significantly reduce training costs and improve profitability. Other priorities include optimizing the budget and decreasing the administrative burden. These priorities are markedly different than for e-learning.

We work we many innovative Training & Coaching firms, as well as corporate L&D organizations for whom in-person delivery is clearly at the core of what they do. These organizations blend other approaches as enhancements - not alternatives- to their ILT. Considering how large the % of actual training hours delivered remains Instructor-led, it does seem like there should be more general interest and investment in optimizing ILT.

People need to relying on ILT as a crutch. The Balance needs to shift and build more just in time resources. It is the unknown that people are scared of.

While Technology would be facilitate ongoing engagement , the Classroom would always be a strategic and experiential learning for the learners and would remain as a backbone delivery mechanism.
