Dan Ariely conducted the study in collaboration with Nina Mazar and published in 2008. It claimed that individuals were likelier to be honest if they signed the disclosure document before providing the information, as opposed to after. The research suggested that signing first made people feel accountable and more truthful.??However, in 2012, allegations of research misconduct surfaced regarding the methodology and data analysis of the study. These allegations raised questions about the findings' integrity, including data manipulation issues and inconsistencies in the reported results. As a result, reexamining the research led to retractions of several papers related to the study.

Why would a world-renowned thought leader, educator, author, and entrepreneur do something against the fundamental tenants of professional and personal values? They lose the most important attribution, credibility if the allegations are true and his intentions are malicious.?


I recently listened to a Shane Parish podcast with Adam Grant about being open to thinking again about our views and opinions if the supporting facts change. In his usual eloquence, Adam retorted that it is crucial not to be a preacher or a prosecutor but to be a scientist in how we process our views and opinions - open to change and critical.?


Dan Ariely's incident suggests that we should keep our critical thinking faculties sharp, be open to reframing as facts and data change, and avoid leaning completely on celebrities and research to support how we form our worldviews. The saving grace of Behavior science is that we can test the hypothesis on ourselves to see if the suggestion holds.?

People constantly cite facts, research, and data to sway opinion. With easy access to un-curated and unvalidated information, generative AI, and polarized views, it is more important than ever to slow down our opinion-forming framework and provide adequate optionality to change our opinions when facts change. Being aware of the context and knowing what clarifying questions to ask becomes a superpower in keeping our sanity.

It is fascinating to see the evolution of "Prompt Engineering" - science and the art of asking generative AI the right questions when engaging with Generative AI (ChatGPT). You might get a different answer depending on how you ask the question.

Keep an open mind and be ready to think again if the facts around your assumptions change. Not just because Adam Grant suggested it but because it makes sense.?
