About Mike Lin, founder of influencersTV
I was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1972, which holds the distinction as being one of The 5 Most Depressing Cities in America?by Business Insider. After spending four?years in Canada, my family moved to Youngstown, Ohio which also made it onto that Business Insider list. I batted 2 for 5 growing up. #win
In 1986, I began my freshman year at?Western Reserve Academy, a?prep?school located in Hudson, Ohio. I wore a coat and tie every day and attended half-day classes on Saturdays. Sports were mandatory. I ran cross country in the fall, fenced in the winter, and ran track in the spring.
I rebelled and wore as much black as I could?... this was my goth phase. I listened to New Order, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Love & Rockets, The Smiths, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, U2, Sinead O'Connor, The Pixies, Sugarcubes, Erasure, Yaz, Howard Jones, The Pretty in Pink Soundtrack, P.I.L., INXS, The Psychedelic Furs, Echo & the Bunnymen, Nine Inch Nails, The Creatures, Nik Kershaw, The Ocean Blue, They Might Be Giants, The Lemonheads, The Sisters of Mercy, and Siouxsie and The Banshees (I once met Siouxsie after a show ... she was very nice).
Hudson is best known for being home to Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Waterson. Read the?L.A. Times?Article?about Bill Waterson.
I spent my Junior Year of High School in Barcelona, Spain through a program?called School Year Abroad. Cheo Hodari Coker, exec producer and showrunner of?Marvel's 'Luke Cage' on Netflix, was a classmate. We were in English class together, he was a brilliant writer.
During my year in Barcelona, I first became exposed to art. I took a class with professor?ángel Vilalta?who introduced me to?Pablo Picasso,?Diego?Velázquez, El Greco,?Hieronymus Bosch, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, and Antoni Gaudi. I was hooked?and had high hopes?that I would someday become an art dealer.?
I walked past?Antoni Gaudí's Casa Batlló every day on my?way to school.
I started my freshman year at?Pomona College?in 1990, it's a liberal arts college located?in Claremont, CA?(about 30 miles east of L.A.). It?recently ranked No. 1 on Forbes 8th Annual Rankings of America's Top Colleges. I majored in International Relations, the closest thing to a business degree. Laszlo Bock, Google's Senior Vice President for People Operations, was a fellow IR major.
According to Wikipedia, Claremont is referred to as 'The City of Trees and PhDs'. Snoop Dogg?owned a house?in Claremont. I drove past his home once.
Musician?Ben Harper owns the Folk Music Center in Claremont, which was founded by his?maternal grandparents, Charles and Dorothy Chase. I saw him perform for free at Rhino Records?in Claremont, where I used to drop?a lot?of money on music. I saw Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals?play at Nick's Cafe, a small coffee shop which has sadly closed down?(I saw?Jewel play there too).
While at Pomona?I booked several bands including: No Doubt?(they hadn't yet released their debut?album), Rage Against the Machine?(they hadn't yet released their debut?album), Catherine Wheel, Failure?(Magnified?was their latest record and is one of my all time favorite albums. They toured with Tool, and Maynard James Keenan's?other band A Perfect Circle?covered Failure's song 'The Nurse Who Loved Me' from their?'Fantastic Planet'?album), Matt Nathanson?(who was a student at Pitzer College, part of the Claremont Colleges. Matt helped me move into?my San Francisco apartment in 1998), Skankin' Pickle?and a lot of other bands.
I designed this flyer. At that time, No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal handled all of the band's?bookings.
Here's the No Doubt setlist from their show at Pomona College.
Rage Against the Machine flyer which I didn't design.
Rage Against the Machine's demo tape was released Dec 1991. Most of the songs made it to their eponymous first album.
Here's a handwritten note from Tom Morello from RATM to me.
Contract for $325 for Rage Against the Machine to perform on Sat, Apr 18, 1992 at Harwood Courtyard, Pomona College.?I wanted to pay the band $300, but Tom insisted on an additional $25 for gas money ... I caved.
Tom Morello's signature for our contract. Ramez Toubassy?(Founding Partner at Blast Off Brands)?signed on behalf of the dorm.
Jordan Kurland and I co-produced the?Kohoutek Festival in 1994. It's?an annual 2 day music and arts festival at Pitzer College. My memory is a little fuzzy on who all the bands were that played that year, but amongst them were Blood of Abraham, Far, Matt Nathanson, and Sekou Andrews. Both Matt & Sekou were students at Pitzer at the time.?Jonah Matranga, the lead singer, and guitarist of?Far, was a Pitzer alum.
Matt Nathanson covering 'Laid' by James.
After graduation,?Jordan?worked for David Lefkowitz/Figurehead Management, in San Francisco. He?spent four years there handling business for Primus, Charlie Hunter, and the Melvins.
Jordan founded Zeitgeist Artist Management in 1999, a boutique artist management firm. Current clients include Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service, The Best Coast, Bob Mould, She & Him, New Pornographers, Rogue Wave, Cloud Nothings, AC Newman, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down, and Release the Sunbird. Jordan is also?co-owner of The Noise Pop Festival and?The Treasure Island Music Festival.
I started collecting the art of Cleveland, Ohio-based artist Derek Hess?in 1993, as he merged?my love of art & music. I own every single print from 1993 - mid 1997. I've been told by his representative Marty Geramita?that I am a part?of a small handful of collectors with such an extensive collection.
Nine inch Nails?was one of my favorite bands my senior year of high school, 1993-1994. A close high school classmate of mine saw Nine Inch Nails play at a local club and?turned me on to their music.
Trent Reznor recorded 'Pretty Hate Machine' in Cleveland, Ohio?while?working nights as a handyman and janitor at the Right Track Studio.?
I played 'Pretty Hate Machine' non-stop when it was released.
At one point Trent played in a Cleveland band called Exotic Birds?which I saw live and really liked (Trent had already left the band by then).?
TV interview with Trent Reznor of Cleveland's 'Exotic Birds' 1985.
If memory serves me correctly I saw NIN play at the Nine of Clubs?in?Cleveland, Ohio (circa 1989), saw them open up for the Jesus and Mary Chain?at the Phantasy Theatre?in Lakewood, Ohio (1990), saw them headline the Phantasy Theatre in Lakewood, Ohio (1990), play at Helter Skelter, Hollywood, CA for the 'Sin Tour' ... there was a chain link fence on the stage and during the last song I scaled it and shook Trent's hand, I saw them play the inaugural?year of?Lollapalooza?in San Diego and Los Angeles (1991), saw them play a 'Self Destruct Warm?Up Show'?at Club With No Name @ The Probe, Los Angeles (1994), watched the 'Further Down the Spiral Tour' at Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas (1994), saw them open up for?David Bowie for the 'Dissonance Tour' at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles (1995), saw them at a surprise show in Cleveland, Ohio flats which happened when I was visiting home, saw 'The Fragile v2.0 Tour' at the Cow Palace in Daly City, CA (2000), saw them play 'Live: With Teeth Tour' at the Oakland Arena in Oakland, CA?(2005), saw them play 'Live: With Teeth Tour' at the?Shoreline Ampitheatre in Mountain View, CA (2006), and had 2nd rows seats for the 'NIN|JA Tour' at Shoreline Ampitheatre in Mountain View, CA (2009)
From the 'Pretty Hate Machine' to?'The Downward Spiral' tours, Trent would give the most energetic, frenzied sets. He would knock?down microphones, run into bandmates, smash?keyboards, scream into the mic ... it was the most intense?live music experience. This is saying a lot as?I've seen TONS?of bands perform live.
Although Pretty Hate Machine was my favorite album at one point,?I've since mellowed with age. 'The Fragile' is my favorite NIN album now, and I love the instrumentals on tracks like 'La Mer' and 'The Great Below'. I remember during 'The Fragile' tour that there there was the most beautiful imagery displayed?during those songs. I dig 'Still' which is a quieter album and love the soundtrack for the?'The Social Network' soundtrack. Trent and Atticus Ross won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score?and the Academy Award for Original Score in 2011 for that soundtrack.
One of my all-time favorite movies is 'Natural Born Killers'. Trent produced the soundtrack.
Trent Reznor x Natural Born Killers Soundtrack.
Here's another art print Derek Hess did for Nine Inch Nails.
:: Music ::
After?college, I worked for a music event production company called RK Diversified Entertainment.?Ray Woodbury and Kevin Lyman were co-owners of the company.
Ray & Kevin were responsible for live production management of Nine Inch Nail's 'The Downward Spiral tour, and were part of the?founding team of the Vans Warped Tour?I saw the Nine Inch Nails band rehearse in the warehouse I worked in (sans Trent). We?once went out for frozen yogurt.?
Our?warehouse stored the set for 'The Downward Spiral' tour, the chair from the 'Closer' video, and Trent's personal belongings.?
The chair from the 'Closer' video
I answered the phone, wrote down messages, staffed crews, drove barricades to gigs, and worked as a roadie setting up and tearing down shows. It was a dream job out of college!
I hooked up Derek Hess with Goldenvoice in Los Angeles to create this poster for Guided By Voices.
The Warped Tour was inspired by a Goldenvoice event called the O.C. Board Fest?on May 6, 1995, featuring Sublime, Social Distortion, and No Doubt. It also featured professional skateboarders.?Kevin Lyman had an event production role for this event. He did a lot of work for Goldenvoice back in those days.
?No Doubt, O.C. Board Fest 1995, 'Open the Gate'
Artist Frank Kozik?did the artwork for a skateboard listing all the bands, it was of a monster shredding on a skateboard ... the skateboard itself was green.?
The Warped Tour was originally going to be called 'The Bomb' tour, but then the Oklahoma City bombing happened, so that name was out. TransWorld had a lifestyle magazine called Warp, which inspired?the Warped Tour name.
I went out on the inaugural Warped Tour in 1995 as the tour manager's assistant. I designed the Vans Warped Tour 1996 website?(click the link to view content via the Wayback?Machine)?and went out on tour writing Daily Grinds. In 1997 I again wrote?Daily Grinds.?
I worked with J.D. Heilprin on the Vans Warped Tour 1996 site.?
Prophet Communications designed the Vans Warped Tour 1997 website. Thor Muller and Josh Feldman were co-founders of Prophet Communications.
Vans Warped Tour 1997?List of Bands.
Eric Lochtefeld, an entrepreneurial 25-year-old?handled all the sponsorship deals for Warped Tour 1995.?He ran a company called Grassroots Event Marketing Inc. He didn't receive?a salary and only made commissions from successful sponsorship deals. He slept for free in Ray Woodbury's home office which had a loft bed.?
Kevin Lyman wanted to keep ticket prices low ... it was $15, a total bargain. Sponsors were brought on board to offset ticket prices,?something innovative at the time. Sony Playstation was one of our big sponsors and had booths set up for kids to play their consoles.
The first year of the Warped Tour (Vans didn't come on board until 1996) didn't have that great attendance in some cities. T-Shirt prices were reduced to $5 near the end of the tour.?
There were some amazing bands that first year. Sublime (before they hit it big ... Kevin actually had to kick them off the tour for a little while?because of Bradley's drug addiction problem), No Doubt played some Pacific Northwest dates (way before they were famous, but they already had a cult following in Orange County), the Deftones were on a 2nd stage fashioned out of one of the truck?trailers (I think it may have been the one that carried?the portable vert ramp), Quicksand (one of my all time favorite bands), CIV (consisting of Gorilla Biscuits alums) were a huge hit on the 2nd stage, Face to Face, and several other bands.?
Sublime, Frazier Park Warped Tour, Sept. 4, 1996. Cameo by Gwen Stefani of No Doubt.
We had professional skaters out on tour?including?Steve Alba, Neal Hendrix, Steve Caballero, Remy Stratton, Sergie Ventura, and Mike Frazier. Salba was responsible for setting up and tearing down the portable vert ramp every day.
The website and poster were done by the Big Gun Project run by?Jim Evans (T.A.Z.).?I remember getting to the Warped Tour website via a 14.4 baud modem and AOL.
Poster from the Inaugural Warped Tour. Note no Vans.
This was one of the few posters done by a promoter in the inaugural year of the Warped Tour.
One of the biggest bands (well, not so big at the time) to come out on the 1996 Vans Warped Tour was Blink-182. They drove themselves in a van (no tour bus) and sold?much merchandise.?
?1996 was when the Vans Warped Tour transformed itself into Punk Rock Summer Camp.

Ron Cameron did ads/shirts/logos/etc.??for the Vans Warped Tour 1996. The Vans Warped Tour logo?he created in 1996 is still in use today.
This was one of the few posters made by a promoter for Warped Tour '96.
Ron Cameron did the design of this poster for Vans Warped Tour '97. 98 Mute?started the tradition of the backstage BBQ this year.
The Vans Warped Tour recently wrapped up its 21st year, and has played to over 9 million fans. It's the longest-running traveling?music festival?in the world. Alums include Katy Perry, Eminem, The Black Eyed Peas, Beck, Green Day, Paramore, Linkin Park, Ozomatli, N.E.R.D, and Weezer. Click here for the full list.

:: Tech ::
I took an Intro to Graphic Design night class in the fall of 1996 at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena (I earned an A) and taught myself HTML. Lynda Weinman's book <Designing Web Graphics>?was an invaluable?resource.
I started designing websites in Mar 1996. One of my first?clients was Epitaph Records. I designed the website for Bored Generation, the label's first enhanced cd?released Aug 1996.
Bored Generation Homepage.

I began working at?Creative Internet Design in Feb?1997. Some?of the websites I worked on?included?ARTISTdirect's Ultimate Band List, Hot Topic, and Baskin Robbins.
CID created the Lollapalooza '96 website which was the first major website to use animated GIFs, Flash, and was the first concert series to sell tickets online.?
I moved to San Francisco during the summer of 1997, as my college girlfriend at the time lived in San Francisco. I had met Dantley Davis (Design Director at Netflix) online, and when I moved up to San Francisco, we became roommates.
I enrolled as a Marketing major at the Academy of Art University. I?took a color theory and figure drawing class (which I almost failed). After a semester I decided to just find a job and learn by doing aka Learn to Earn.
Adjacency had published a book called Creating Killer Interactive Websites in 1997,?and?they had a forum on their website. In the forum, I correctly answered who created the internet and won a copy of the book. I insisted on picking it up in person and then nagged Creative Director Bernie Dechant to hire me, which he did.
I started off as a Production Designer coding html & designing pages for Land Rover, Patagonia, Rollerblade, and PowerBar. I was promoted to Visual Designer and worked on the Williams Sonoma Wedding & Gift Registry launch.
I was fortunate in my career to have worked at companies like ADJACENCY (acquired by Sapient for $50 million in 1999 when we had 57 employees ... Garry Tan, Partner, Y Combinator was a software engineer intern there), Sapient (listed on the S&P 500 near the peak of the internet bubble), Yahoo! (when they started hiring dedicated visual designers. I overlapped with?Jeff Weiner, and would later be?surprised and delighted when he appeared in LinkedIn's very small cafeteria and was named interim president?in Jan, 2009), LinkedIn (43rd employee and 2nd UI designer) and Zynga (I sat with the CityVille team as the game?was being developed. I worked on Zynga's platform products on Facebook, including the Inbox and Global Navigation (aka Zbar) which cross-promoted other Zynga games).
I did some freelance work too, this was?for the X Games Volunteers site.
I got a?VIP pass for the 1999 X-Games in San Francisco thanks?to my work for X-Games Volunteers. I witnessed?Tony Hawk make history firsthand when he landed 'The 900'.
Another freelance client was?Green Day. I?got to meet?the band in their East Bay studio while?they were recording 'Warning'.
I applied for a job at LinkedIn through their website in March 2006. I didn't hear back, so I used the site to look for the hiring manager. I contacted Ches Wajda, who was the lead UX Designer (Visual and UI), and immediately got a response back (definitely?meta: getting hired by LinkedIn via LinkedIn).?
The interviews went well with the product team. My last interview was with?Reid Hoffman.?We interviewed on a Saturday (Yes, Reid does work 7 days a week) at a Barnes & Noble in San Francisco ... now a Lucky Strike Bowling Alley. His meeting after mine was with Shawn Fanning of Napster?fame.
Here's the entire LinkedIn product team circa late 2006. Left to Right: Me, Chris Saccheri, Scott Schlegel, Sarah Imbach, Omar Lee, Allen Blue, Steve Ganz, Maisy Samuelson, David Hahn?and Gregory Cervelli. We were 2 UI Designers, 3 Web Developers, 4 Product Managers, and 1 Chief of Staff/VP Product.?Reid was also involved with the product, he was once my manager.
Here's the team that launched photos on profile in 2007. Left to Right: Me, Steve Ganz, James Richards, Elliot Shmukler, Georg Puchta, Adam Nash,?and?Ivaylo Mihov. View more?LinkedIn 2007 history ... I did the visual design for the 'Answers' product and appeared in four of the photos.
Adam Nash sat next to me. He was a FarmVille addict and wrote several posts about 'The Personal Economics of Farmville' on his personal blog.?Adam is 33% of the reason why I went to Zynga, the other 33% was because it was a 15-minute walk from my house, and the last 33% was because they were once?considered by The Atlantic as?being the 2nd Most Valuable Startup in the World.
When not tending to?his real-world FarmVille, Adam is CEO of Wealthfront, the leading?online financial management service. The role is so perfect for him! Adam loves personal finance and gave talks while at LinkedIn about money management.
The management team?of Wealthfront consists of several prominent LinkedIn alum that I worked with: Kate Aronowitz (VP of Design), Elliot Shmukler (VP of Product & Growth), and Avery Moon (VP of Research & Engineering).
Ok, let's pause for a moment and talk about Adam for a little bit.?He was Vice President of Product Management at LinkedIn. He had a massive impact on LinkedIn's culture. He introduced Hackdays to LinkedIn, created Paper Reid, built a giant LEGO?In, and cranked out a ton?of t-shirts.
Paper Reid
Read Adam's?post about 'Building LinkedIn in LEGO' and the follow up post 'LinkedIn in LEGO: Q&A'.
?
As you can tell from Adam's tweet #TShirtsMatter. And yes, I am a mind reader ... Adam sat next to me for several years.
While we're talking about tweets, am I the only person who thinks this??Anyways, moving on.
Zynga ranked at #2 as Most Valuable Startup in the World by The Atlantic. Facebook ranked as #1.
We got these cool keychains?letting us know what number of employees we were. Although I was #82, there were only 42 people at LinkedIn when I started.
This was the T-Shirt we received at the LinkedIn company picnic during the summer of 2006. The quote is by Reid Hoffman ... I think it was from a talk he gave?at Yahoo!?
This was LinkedIn's version of Twitter's fail whale. We used to have to take the site down for maintenance. Wizard illustration by Ches Wajda.

I don't think LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner knows about this product. It's not discussed during earnings calls. Viewable here ... for now.
Guitar Hero was a huge part of LinkedIn's culture in the early days. Illustration by Omar Lee.
LinkedIn's Guitar Hero tournament was held on the day Guitar Hero 2 was released so no one would have the advantage of playing the songs in advance. Pictured here?are?Allen Blue vs?Candy Chastain Mielke.?
Omar Lee and I worked on a T-Shirt that shows all LinkedIn hires from 2003-2006 along with start dates. I started on May 15, 2006, 4 weeks after the birth of my son. I had delayed my start date by 2 months so?my son's birth?would be covered under Yahoo!'s health insurance policy.
We started the tradition of going to Arby's when I started at LinkedIn May 2006. For every User Experience & Design Hire (Designers & Web Developers) we would celebrate by going to the Arby's in Sunnyvale?for lunch. I must have gone to Arby's over 30+ times. This tradition ended (aka 'The Day the Roast Beef Died') with my departure from LinkedIn almost 4 1/2 years later in Sep 2010. This photo is of me shaking the hand of an Arby employee.
On June 18, 2012, Chris Saccheri (former Director of Web Development/LinkedIn Founding Team Member, currently Father in Residence, The Saccheri Family) returned to LinkedIn to give a talk entitled the 'History of the UED Team'.
This photo is of the 'LinkedIn UED Old Timers'. From Left to Right: Ches Wajda (1st UI Designer, designer of the LinkedIn logo), Chris Saccheri (1st Web Developer), Omar Lee (3rd UI Designer), Scott Schlegel (2nd Web Developer), Me (2nd UI Designer). Note that Arby's has been replaced with the Wheel of Lunch.
In preparation for Chris' presentation, we had an e-mail thread for slides ... hilarity ensued.

We had to expand the character count on the 'I don't know' button, as people named Christian would be truncated to 'I don't know Christ'.
Relationships matter.
LinkedIn launched with this tagline on May 5, 2003, as explained by Reid in a post celebrating LinkedIn's 10-year birthday?(aka Cinco de LinkedIn). If you take a look at the founding list you'll see many of them came from SocialNet, a dating site Reid founded in 1997.
:: Activism ::
I worked with Art Agnos, former mayor of San Francisco & 7 mothers from Potrero Hill to successfully save Daniel Webster Elementary School from closure in 2007. I designed the logo and worked on all the marketing materials.
I was the Jose Elementary School PTA president from Aug 2009 - May 2010. Jose Ortega Elementary School is located in San Francisco, and both my daughter Alegría & son Mateo attended the Mandarin immersion program. The school has a very diverse community of joyful learners. I helped organize the very first fundraiser auction for the school.

I started an art e-mail list called sketchypad where I sent weekly emails listing all the San Francisco gallery openings I thought were cool. sketchypad?later transformed into a blog.
I collaborated with Tiffany Bozic on the design of the sketchypad postcard. I was her very early art patron and have one of the largest collections of her art.
