The Influence of Movies: A Double-Edged Sword
Movies and TV shows have always been a source of entertainment, but in recent times, they seem to have taken on a much deeper role in people’s lives. While films can inspire, educate, and entertain, they can also create unrealistic expectations and, in some cases, lead to negative influences.
When Entertainment Becomes Obsession
As my junior, Shafica Nasreen , rightly pointed out, movies are meant to entertain, but some people take them too seriously. The concept of fandom, which was once about appreciation, has now turned into an obsession for some. Fans invade the privacy of their favorite celebrities, crossing personal boundaries in the name of admiration.
Worse still, crime movies, meant to depict the workings of a criminal mind, sometimes end up giving people the wrong ideas. A recent tragic incident in Andhra Pradesh serves as an example—a former military officer was influenced by the movie Sookshmadarshini and murdered his wife. Similarly, a group of hostel students attempted to rob a bank after watching Lucky Bhaskar. These cases highlight how movies, when misinterpreted, can have dangerous consequences.
'Films can be a mirror to society, reflecting both its beauty and it's flaws"
Instead of getting influenced in a negative way, people should focus on the positive aspects of cinema. Movies showcasing bravery, perseverance, and patriotism like a war films can inspire individuals to serve the nation or contribute to society meaningfully.
The Unrealistic Expectations of Modern Cinema
Looking back at my childhood Vidya shree SR , movies were purely a form of entertainment. Even up until 2010, films had a more grounded approach to storytelling. But today, many movies depict unrealistic scenarios be it a fight or portrayal of life. These unrealistic standards can create high expectations, leading to real-world disappointments, especially among younger audiences.

One of the biggest issues is how modern movies influence relationships. Romantic films often create an illusion of love that is far from reality which leads to unnecessary complications in real-life relationships
Shafica also pointed out how movies portray college life in a misleading way. Many films sell the dream of a vibrant and carefree college experience, filled with adventure, dance sequences, and drama. But the reality is quite different—college life involves hard work, deadlines, and responsibility. Movies like Don mislead new students, giving them false expectations about what college life is really like.
The 90s vs. 2K Kids Debate: Is One Era Better?
Every generation looks back and wonders if the past was better. As a 2K kid, I often feel that the 90s had a simpler, more genuine form of entertainment.
“It’s not about generation it’s just us who try’s to fit in even if we didn’t want to.”
Movies will continue to evolve, and so will society. The key is to enjoy cinema responsibly, drawing inspiration from the good while staying grounded in reality.
After all, movies should enhance our lives, not dictate them.
So, do you think movies today shape our mindset more than they should, or is it up to us to filter what we take from them?
