The Influence Ascendant: Nextgen's Greatest Challenge
In Neil Postman's important book "Amusing Ourselves to Death," he underscores the peril of a society captivated by entertainment at the expense of critical issues. Nowadays, influence plays a huge role in who, what and where we direct our attention.
At the heart of this problem is the idea of influence - basically, what makes us think, what we care about, and how we act. In today's society, especially with the internet, influence is like money. It's powerful and can be used by anyone who wants to control what people believe or do. But when this influence gets out of control, it can cause a lot of problems. And it has. In fact, it's opened up a Pandora's box of issues and put the entire society at risk.
Let's explore some of the contemporary manifestations of influence and consider their effects on our social fabric. Let's then use the exploration to reflect on how they are managed, underscoring the necessity for responsible leadership in their oversight.
Each of these factors intersect and amplify one another, forming a complex web of influences that significantly shape societal attitudes, behaviors, and outcomes.
Given our awareness of the potential dangers posed by these forces, it prompts the question: What proactive measures are being taken to effectively manage them, and who bears the responsibility for providing leadership in this critical endeavor.?
Parents & Guardians, traditionally seen as the primary influencers and moral guides for children, find themselves increasingly overwhelmed and distracted by the same digital temptations plaguing our youth. Instead of providing steadfast guidance and nurturing critical thinking skills, many parents unwittingly surrender their roles to digital devices & social media, inadvertently exposing their children to harmful influences & misinformation.
Educators, entrusted with shaping young minds and imparting knowledge, face an uphill battle against the relentless tide of distractions and disinformation. In an era where attention spans dwindle, and the allure of viral content trumps intellectual rigor, educators struggle to instill the values of skepticism, critical analysis, and independent thinking in their students. Moreover, the pressure to conform to standardized testing and curriculum requirements further compromises their ability to foster genuine intellectual curiosity and moral discernment.
Coaches, once revered as mentors who imparted valuable life lessons through sportsmanship and teamwork, now contend with the corrosive influence of win-at-all-cost mentalities and hyper-competitive environments. As youth sports become increasingly commercialized and driven by the pursuit of fame and fortune, the emphasis on character development and ethical conduct takes a backseat, leaving young athletes susceptible to exploitation and moral compromise.
Church and community leaders, once pillars of moral authority and social cohesion, face an uphill battle against the secular forces of individualism and materialism. In an age where digital communities often supplant physical ones, the bonds of solidarity and mutual support that once bound communities together weaken, leaving individuals vulnerable to isolation and radicalization.

The responsibility for providing leadership does not fall on any one group alone but requires a collaborative effort across all levels of society. Parents must reclaim their roles as moral guides and digital stewards for their children, educators must prioritize critical thinking and intellectual curiosity over standardized metrics, and coaches must refocus on character development and ethical conduct in youth sports. Simultaneously, church and community leaders must adapt to the evolving digital landscape while reaffirming the values of solidarity and mutual support that underpin social cohesion
If we don't do something about it, the serious impacts of mental health problems experienced by young people, will continue to adversely affect everyone.
With so much time spent on phones and computers, it's easy to feel really isolated and disconnected from others. That's why anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues are on the rise.
And it's not just about how we're feeling. When leaders in important places aren't doing their jobs properly, it leaves us open to being taken advantage of by people who don't have our best interests at heart. It's like we're left unprotected, and that can make everything feel even worse
The consequences of this unchecked influence go beyond just causing arguments in society. It's like a wrecking ball hitting the very core of how we stick together as a community and how we feel about ourselves. All these conflicting ideas make it tough for our youth to know what to believe. And to make things worse, they're starting to lose trust in the people and organizations they used to rely on for guidance.
Furthermore, feeling lost and unsure about the world can lead some people, especially young ones, to turn to drugs as a way to cope. It's like a quick fix to numb the overwhelming feelings of confusion and chaos. But in reality, it just makes things worse. Instead of facing the problems head-on, they end up stuck in a cycle of addiction and feeling even more hopeless.
We cannot afford to sit idly by while our children's future hangs in the balance. It's imperative that we take decisive action now, recognizing that the stakes are too high to ignore. We must actively strive to cultivate environments where individuals, especially our youth, feel empowered to navigate the complexities of the digital world with confidence and discernment. This means placing a heightened emphasis on the development of critical thinking skills, equipping our young people with the tools they need to navigate the deluge of information and misinformation that bombards them daily. By instilling in them the ability to think critically and analyze information objectively, we empower them to make informed decisions that shape their own futures.
Most importantly, rebuilding trust in our institutions is not just a lofty goal; it's an urgent necessity. We must heed Postman’s call to action and hold those in positions of power accountable for their actions and demand transparency and integrity in governance. Only through a culture of accountability and open dialogue can we begin to rebuild trust in our institutions and restore faith in our collective ability to address the formidable challenges that lie ahead.
Our children deserve nothing less than our unwavering commitment to creating a world where they can thrive, free from the shadows of manipulation and mistrust. The time to act is now.
